After reading the description, this auction should have a "Danger, Will Robinson" audio clip playing in the background.

The battery charge looked kind of low to me. Could the damage to the front driver's side have affected the synergy drive?

Why a salvage title? Must have been some wreck. The low mileage is kind of scary...odometer replacement, perhaps?

Airbags are not optional.

How about that wiring harness?

The whole section of why he could not let you take it to a mechanic to get checked out is a bit scary as well. You get one drive around the block? Oh, yeah...better cough up a cashier's check 1st.

This 2005 Toyota Prius has a salvage title because it was involved in a car accident a few months ago. It was hit in the front.

The driver and passenger dash airbags did deploy and have NOT been replaced. I REPEAT: THE AIRBAGS HAVE NOT BEEN REPLACED.

The left side headlight, the front bumper cover, radiator and condenser and the hood were replaced with all original Toyota parts which I bought from the Toyota dealership in phoenix.

Again, the vehicle has been in an accident, IT HAS SALVAGE TITLE, IT IS BEING SOLD AS IS, WHERE IS, NO WARRANTY EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED OF ANY SORT.

Please do your homework BEFORE, I repeat, BEFORE BIDDING. NO RESERVE. This means whoever is the highest bidder gets the car.

Besides the damages described above, when I got the car, two connectors that mates with the inverter reservoir tank were broken. Toyota does NOT sell these connectors individually; in order to get these connectors, you’d have to buy the complete engine wiring harness for a little over $2000.

These connectors were not replaced on this car. They were fabricated. Of course Toyota service center is quick to point out that because these connectors were not replaced, Toyota may not honor a warranty service in the future. I do not recommend driving this car until the wiring harness has been professionally replaced.

The two airbags together is approximately $1200.

Something is fishy. The damage he describes does not justify a salvage title.

I would hope so. A 2005 Prius with 219 miles and a Salvage Title!

On the other hand, while driving 1.5 miles to a friend’s house on the 4th, I counted eight Prii . . . so Prius, in general, are not THAT hard to find.

I must hand it to the seller. He does give ample warning, ample warning, ample warning, ample warning, ample warning. :?

The current bid is $4,000.

If you put $4,000 into it for the harness and airbags you've got a Prius for $8,000. This one looks like a #6 so that's a savings of about $18,000 over new.

Of course the salvage title reaps it's own problems, especially with insurance. Since it's salvage I doubt any warranty would still be in effect.

The guy has 40 feedbacks with 100% positive.

It's a crapshoot. Depends on how lucky you feel.

 

As far as eBay goes, the really serious guys wait until the last moment.... I expect the final price to be around $10,000.

From his feedbacks, this guy sells used parts. I bet he bought this one dirt-cheap and tries to restore it. He stopped because some parts are simply too difficult for him to get.

 

I'd love some spare parts, but I'm not that desperate. I'll go junkin' some other time...

 

Do I sense some jealousy in some us proud owners here! Easy on the guy. I know many of us paid top dollar for our fine prius. that doesn't mean we should lothe others for scoring what in their judgement is a good deal. Like Godiva said, Saving a few thousand dollars over new isn't such a bad luck -- i don't suppose the lucky buyer won't do their home work.

I don't think there is any part on the Prius that is difficult to get. So long as you're prepared to pay your local dealer they'll order any parts for you. I went to that website that seller provided. Seems to me you can order just about any part on the prius.
My take is, unlike most of us who are financing our prius, the seller of course paid cash for it, and they can't afford the cash demand anymore.

Why won't he let the car be taken to a dealer or a shop that has proper diagnostic equipment? Driving it around the block is not a very good indicator of what is wrong with it. A mechanic looking at it without the resources available at the shop is the equivalent of a doctor diagnosing someone without access to a lab, X rays, CAT scanners, etc.

It's around $14,000 now.

Even if it gets to $18,000 that's still a savings even if the new owner shells out $4,000 to redo the harness and airbags. That would be a package 6 for the cost of a package 1.

Would I do it? No.

1. You have to have that much cash up front. You aren't going to be able to finance a used car with a salvage title.

2. If I'm going to buy a used car (which *is* a better deal than new for any car) then I'll buy it from a dealer because I can finance it and it will have some sort of warranty.

3. I would never buy a used car with a salvage title. All sorts of problems with insurance and such. Not to mention...kiss any kind of warranty goodbye.

4. Even if you put in the $ to repair the car good as new it will always have a salvage title. Trying to sell it down the road will be a big problem.

But....if the price were low enough and someone wanted a Prius badly enough I can see it as attractive. But if you've got that much cash up front....why not buy a new Prius and finance the little you're short? You not only have full warranty and can buy an extended warranty if you want one you also get the tax incentive.

Well said Godiva. I never thought of it that way. Then again, why get into additional debt if one can afford to cough up the large sum today. From what I have learned Toyota honors their warranty on any car regardless of title unless of course they can prove that the cause of a problem is as a result of collision.

There is one thread here of a fellow prius owner who has had an accident in their prius and Toyota replaced ECU and other warranty service because of problems they were having with their car.

I am really interested in seeing what this one goes for. We probably will eventually meet the new owner of that car on this forum.
