I bought MPT with a USB cable last year from some internet joint, as I recall, for around 35 bucks. Verizon sells the same package for circa $39. There are pirated versions all over the place, though, and that's where I believe many pick up their copies.

So thanks again for all the info you've all shared. Because your comments were pretty positive about it, I got the Motorola E815 because it was basically free after rebates and I got another photo phone for my son for free as well. I wouldn't have bothered, even for free, if the feedback was negative.

User manuals in hand, it took a little while to get it and the Prius to find each other, but they finally did. One problem I had was I couldn't scroll through the Prius' telephone settings menu. The scroll arrows went to either the first menu item or the last - nothing in between. Did anyone have the same problem? But I eventually managed to find the pass key screen. Don't ask me how. The E815 gave me some flak about voice dialing, too, but after a re-boot it suddenly worked. I just have to spend some more time learning both systems. It's interesting how this worked out. I bought a new cell phone, but now I have 2 new phones to learn - the Motorola and the Prius.

How are you all getting the seem edit? Will it enable me to transfer the PB directly to the car?

Glad to hear you like the phone (all two of them!) and that you didn't have much trouble getting it set up to pair with your car. Once the latter is done, though, it should pair automatically every time you power up the car provided you have set the phone that way (i.e. auto handsfree on.....or whatever the setting is on the E815).

Re the PB transfer, uh, not yet. The semi-pro hackers over at HoFo are still working on it:

I have to say that it doesn't appear real promising at this point but the phone initially qualified with full OBEX. Thus, it's probably just a matter of time before someone figures out how to re-enable what Verizon managed to disable.

Uh oh... I ordered an E815 Saturday & it's supposed to be delivered Wednesday. Now I see that Verizon took it off its website as an available phone.

I came upon an exchange of postings about this. Among other things, there's speculation Verizon may have discovered a software problem with its V-Cast. That's just speculation. I wonder if there's more to it -- perhaps related to concerns raised here... such as OBEX?

    Jayhawkguy,

I tried to get this phone by phone with Verizon Wireless in order to take advantage of a phone-order-only discount, but they were out of stock there as well as on line. I went to a Verizon store and bought the whole package with no problem. Probably you'll want to call the store first and make sure they're in stock.

    I don't know anything about s/w problems.

So . . . why can't I scroll through the settings menu in the Prius? The arrows go to either the first item or the last. I can't enter phone book info manually. When I try to input a number I get "Selected Phone Book is empty." The manual is oddly silent on manually entering PB numbers.

OK, just read another thread with the same q about manually entered no's in the PB. Not possible. What a drag. But why can't I scroll thru the settings menu?

    Susan,

Right, no manual entry. I suppose we can only hope Toyota/Denso corrects that in future iterations of the system.

Re the settings menu, the answer to that is there's really nothing to scroll through. There are only two screens so pressing the arrow just takes you to the second screen (or the first if you press the up arrow while in the second screen).

    Tag,

Thanks for all your input. Yes, the scroll bar takes you to 1st & 2nd screens of the menu, but the manual shows specifically choosing menu items with the scroll arrows when you're first introducing the phone and the car. The photos in the manual show the scroll dot next to each item. More buttons are available in those items per the manual when you can choose these items rather than just see the list if the scroll bar isn't on them. I have no idea at this point how I got to the correct screens withoug being able to access the screens per the manual's directions, or if I could duplicate the process with a new phone. I'll worry about it then! Just seems odd.

ya know... there are other uses for the 815 or any BT phone from verizon.

if you have Mac Tiger 10.4 on a computer with bluetooth, you can use your cellphone to connect to the verizon 3G network and use your cellphone as a modem.

this provides speeds up to the 1Mbps limit bandwidth (that is the BT transfer limit. the 3G network limit is either 1.54 Mbps or 2 Mbps depending on the switch you are accessing).

doing this gives you totally untethered connectivity at very good speeds. for best results duing setup, disable airport. make sure the cellphone is in discover mode, then go to BT preferences in Tiger and make sure you specify that you are setting up a mobile phone.

pair it up and then go into the connection settings

    number dialed will be #777
account name your 10 digit [email protected]
    password vzw

when you connect you will be using airtime so if you have unlimited nights and weekends. U B surfing 4 free during those times. best part is that if you are in the broadband network (currently covers 90 million people with estimated coverage of 145 million by the end of the year) nominal download speeds are 400-700 kbps. uploads suck 40-60 kbps. but the best part is that if you dont have access to broadband area or just have a weak signal, you will automatically drop down to the 1XRT network which caps at 144 kbps (nominal 40-60 kbps) but it covers 275 million people so that means you have connectivity over 92% of the populated US

The bluetooth DUN (Dial up networking) profile is disabled on all verizon bluetooth phones. So what you stated above is not true. It is easily re-enabled on the E815, not sure about others.

Verizon also disables file transfers between computers and the phone (OBEX), Which requires you to buy ringtones/wallpapers/videos from verizon rather than put them on yourself.

Verizon sucks because of this, IMHO. However, there coverage is unbeatable.

The whole point of a bluetooth handsfree system is that it's "handsfree". With all of verizon's current bluetooth offerings, it requires me to pull the phone out my pocket and dial manually since it won't let me transfer my phonebook.

Bought the E815 today but all purchases (I was told) are sent out of warehouse, phone is not yet in stock in stores. Two day delivery promised with activation instructions included.
    We'll see!

thanks for the information. i will now go tell a friend of mine that what he has been doing for the past 6 months is not possible.

what i described in my previous post does NOT have anything to do with transfering files.

you cant make a call without a cellphone with BT capability with your Prius. am i right?

but you can make a call with a Moto V 710 or any other BT capable phone, right?

so the car can only make calls with a phone, right?

so the computer can only make calls also using the BT functionality if it has a modem or a phone that can be used as a modem, right?

what i am describing is using the handset as a modem. it cannot transfer files from the computer to the phone. that is NOT what i said it could do. it is only dialing #777 and exchanging a bit of information to verifies its identity

it can however, dial the number that is required to connect to the verizon wireless EVDO network.

i currently access the EVDO network from my laptop using a Verizon PC 5220 aircard. before i got the aircard, i was also using the V710 for internet access on my laptop as Tiger 10.4.1 has native drivers already built in.

the only reason i didnt continue to use the V710 is because i disconnected my home internet connection and use the EVDO connection as my only connectivity. i am connected for several hours a day, and during that time i cant use my cellphone to make calls. since i no longer have a home phone, i got an aircard.

so i can garantee you that what i described does work, but you are right, file transfer is disabled. and their speed, coverage, and reliability is unmatched in the industry.

also, even if you dont have a BT phone, over ½ of the phones verizon offers, will connect in the same way i described if you purchase a mobile office kit for the phone. the kit provides connectivity to the computer by wire. all the other settings i outlined above are the same.

Correct. You need a bluetooth phone in order to use the phone functionality of the prius. :-P

Verizon's bluetooth phones all can make calls in the prius, they just lack the capability of transferring your phonebook into the car's memory.

I think you should be able to hook up verizon phone via the USB cable and use them as a modem. They just don't let you do that over the bluetooth connection for some reason.

Oh also, the new version of iSync (2.1) for mac OS X 10.4 allows you to sync the E815's phonebook over bluetooth.

u can do it with a Mac tiger version 10.4.1 has native drivers for verizon phones built in. on a wintel PC u cant do it
