 Scary experience today.. .had to pass someone and hit the gas pedal, after I passed and let my foot off the gas, the car was still speeding. wasnt sure what was going on, so i stepped on the brake but the engine was still revving. finally reached down and saw that the gas pedal was stuck and had to pull it up. also noticed that it was in 'b' gear.. I have never used 'b' gear before so I am assuming it must have automatically switched into that gear when the gas pedal was stuck while I was trying to brake? I was very lucky in that there was no one in front of me nor behind me at the time.

I thought I had read some posts a while back about prius and stuck gas pedals, but couldnt find anything in my search on the forum. Now I am afraid to step on the gas with any amount of pressure for fear of it getting stuck again. Anyone else ever have this problem?

nope, but here's what I suppose happened. The floormat came unhooked, moved and got stuck on the gas pedal. In the scramble to get the gas pedal "unstuck," you inadvertantly bumped the gearshift downward, putting the Prius into "B" operation.

    Just my guess.

Bad guess Brandon. Prius gas pedal can stick upon hard acceleration. It has nothing to do with floor mats. It's a potentially fatal situation, so shouldn't be so quickly dismissed. Better advice is to not panic and then apply the brakes.

BTW, this is over 3 years old thread.

2004 - 2009 Prius was not affected from the gas pedal recall but only the floor mat recall.

To stop the engine you need to hold the START/OFF button down for a minimum of three (3) seconds.

Why not just select neutral? Engine drops to near idle once neutral is selected even at full throttle. Takes half of one second.

As a new member to the forum, forgive me if this has already been covered but I am unable to find it.

In December we Prius owners received a notice about the gas pedal sticking with an explanation that the cause was the floor mat. The suggestion was that we simply remove the mat and drive on safely. Now with the latest news about Toyota accelerator problems, I am confused even though I understand that production of the Prius is not being halted. Am I to believe that Toyota cars have two problems with accelerators sticking--one involving the floor mat and another more basic to the accelerator device itself?

Thanks for the answer. Or, just refer me to a previous post that answers my question if you can.

Forget previous posts. Just stick your head down into the foot-well and work the accelerator pedal with your hand. You won't break anything! But you will be able to tell if there is any tendency for the accelerator to stick in an any open position rather than return the closed stop.

If all seems well, there is nothing to worry about. After all, you have had the car for 6 years without problems.

the prius is only involved in the floor mat problem not the gas pedal problem.. as of today.. maybe it can change.. keep a eye on the news.

    but nothing to wurry
just shift in to N neutral and apply the brakes

The Prius pedal uses an electronic position sensor, the other models use a mechanical linkage. Different mechanisms, different problems, though both can be affected by out-of-position floor mats.

I think that there's a coordinated effort by certain groups or companies to be more agressive in going after the competition via the internet. From GM's own words I think that they are the most likely candidate, along with the help of the UAW. Since mid-December there has been a sudden influx of new posters coming out of the woodwork to highlight every single complaint and issue and trying to create a firestorm of protest against Toyota.

The Camry, Corolla and Prius are prime targets. These posters pose as 'new Toyota xxxx owners' who are suddenly against everything that Toyota stands for in every product line from Trucks to hybrids to cars.

I am a betting man and I'd bet $$$ to donuts that this is the case.

Don't be so quick to dismiss this problem by blaming the poster, I understand its nice to pretend nothing it going on, but something is, otherwise Toyota wouldn't be trying to fix and find out where the problem is.

I didn't blame any poster I remarked on a noticable change in the types of posters and the tone since mid-December. If the posters like one herein starts going off on the Tundra and Camry and sludge while the Prius has none of these known issues that to me is a certain tipoff.

But yes you are absolutely right that a questioning post from a new owner and new poster is not an indictment. It's simply a question like we all had when we all started here.

It's pretty easy to see the difference in the two though, one becomes an argument on Toyota in general one is focussed on a particular question.

Did you notice that the original poster had 49 posts? That doesn't make him an automatic sign on to post bad stuff about the Prius or Toyota, its very possible he experienced what he experienced. Do I think Toyota is bad, no, not by a long shot, do I think this is a real problem, must be, Toyota is working on a fix, do I think the Prius might be involved now or at some point, yes I do.

A while ago I would have thought your post was hysterical paranoid crazy talk but I'm on another Forum for my other car (Crown Vic Net) and most posters there have a very scary hatred for Toyota.
I mean HATRED. Like Toyota is the reason for all of there an Detroits problems. They all hope Toyota dies an ugly death.
Some posts on there seemed giddy that Toyota's were killing people.

I tried to point out there hating the wrong people.

Detroit has problems because they made a sh*tty car for years.
Toyota revolutionized manufacturing with there "LEAN SYSTEM" car building and there 6SIGMA quality control.
American car companies stuck there head in the ground for years and prayed America would remain stupid and hooked to the oil tit.
And we didn't let them down.

    Plus GM is incredibly corrupt.
Which works out pretty good because so are most of our elected officials.

GM built a viable electric car more than 10 years ago. Soon as the market showed interest they sold the most important part the battery technology to the oil companies.
    Wow...that worked out pretty good.
Oil companies killed that technology right quick. DONE.

All under GH Bush's admin with Cheney riding shotgun. All of them either on Oil Boards or Car Maker Boards.
Just ridiculous. They probably needed dollies to wheel the bags of cash back and forth.

And then GM although seeing interest in the EV product dropped that line immediately.

Meanwhile Toyota saw what GM had produced. Realized Hybrids were the future and immed. began developement of the Prius and there own developement of battery technology and the THS.

Who Killed the Electric Car? - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I don't believe in modern times we have ever seen more corruption on both sides than we have seen in the last 10 years from our elected officials. Which is why our country is in the fix its in right now. And short of Banning all lobbyists from Capital hill I see no
    future in our present system.

But yes to your post. I have a feeling your right. It would not surpise me a bit. It has really become that ridiculous right now.

LOL! Yes this is a 3 year old thread! Someone found a dried out old piece of wood they wanted to throw on the panic and fear fire.

The Prius is manufactured in Japan, the pedal problem does not apply...nice try whomever...

Sadly, I've seen the hostilty grow. As Prius penetrates deeper into the mainsteam, the more they are reminded of their troubles. Lack of progress really hits home when you're seeing more and more on the road. They're frustrated and need a scapegoat and/or the competition to also struggle.
