LA Times Headline: Prius' woes not limited to brakes

    I saw something else which measured the increased risk of having an accident from someone texting while driving, and it is also much higher than the risk of a defect.
    Why? Think about how much hype and effort goes into defect prevention and resolution, vs how prevalent defects actually are, and compare that with how prevalent texting (and other bad driving habits) are, and how little prevention is done there...

    Well if you don't like the car, don't buy is, what is there to argue about? Seriously, feel free to buy and drive any car you want, won't make a bit of difference to me.

    And where are some links to how people are far, far more fearful of this sort of "spectacular" death than the things that are much, much more likely to kill you? I wonder how many smokers are currently freaking out about their accelerator pedals right now...

    Very true, but I bought my Prius back on July when it was just being released... none of the problems (rattles, winter MPG drop, poor interior quality, poor seat comfort, brake issues) were known at that time. Unfortunately, 3 miles of test drive is not enough to get a real sense of a car, so I trusted Toyota record of good quality.

    The only thing I trusted turned out to be BS!

    OK so you're disappointed. Big deal. Sell it and move on. I OTOH have less discriminating tastes and I love my 05 after 140,000+ miles and I'll get another one or two at the next opportunity.

    Your dissapointment is noted, my satisfaction is noted. End of story.

    But if you feel that you must persist in making other's lives as miserable as yours simply because you're disappointed then just be ready to be smacked around on a daily basis. Do you really have nothing better to do than whine about your disappointment?

    Too many of us are uncertain and that's not good.

    I can't trust my government, the corporate media nor can I trust Toyota.

    I guess it gets back to "In God we trust" but that's no way to drive.

    I was going to keep quiet since Toyota appears to want to do the right thing. Then I hear that there will be no recall and they are thinking about a service call. So I filed with the NTSA (spelling?) my actual experience. Maybe they are now encouraged to issue a service check.

    If they were more responsive, the filing would not have been necessary.

    Then you sir have been seriously misled. Anyone with the wisdom acquired by living and observing understands that it pays to defer any purchase of any new model car until the 2nd or 3rd year of its introduction. In that way one avoids most of the inevitable engineering glitches that will show up in the early years, even with so-called derivatives.
    That is especially true now with the increasing technological complexity of modern cars. Getting the entire setup right out-of-the-box is still more a matter of luck than anything else, especially with the use of virtual prototyping. There really is no substitute for driving the actual hardware to the limits of its envelope. Which is what we have always done in the aerospace industry, where fly-by-wire controls have existed for decades.

    I have confidence that Toyota will survive this imbroglio, suitably chastened I hope to the fact that engineering excellence should never be sacrificed on the alter of sales volume. From all of us Toyota owners, they deserve our continued but cautious support as this current media-driven hysteria gradually fades with time.

    Honestly, what did you expect?

    You're basically buying a powertrain with a car around it. 3 miles of a test drive should have been enough to indicate that the interior plastics were pretty shoddy, and the rest of the interior (seats, surfaces) were 'econobox chic'.

    It's a great commuting car, but don't expect anything approaching luxury. As soon as I moved and didn't have 80 mile commute, I ditched mine and never looked back.

    You love your Prius and you keep praising about it, so what?

    I hate my Prius and keep bashing it, so what?

    You guys don't understand... I warned about the poor quality of the Prius several months ago and people bashed me and called me names, now with all the recalls and brake problems, I'm having a blast :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

    Who's life is miserable?

    Like I said before, I have the same level of consideration for my Prius as I have for my Bad Pen.

    Will use it until the ink is over, but that does not mean I have to love it. Fair enough?

    Yep, absolutely. I will take that one. For the Prius I would not have to wait 2-3 years... with 3-4 months after launch, even this Prius fan-club website, was claiming the rattles, poor interior quality, poor seat support, and started to report the drop on the MPG in mid-fall...

    My fault... completely! Agree with you! Should have waited!

    You can't really be serious about not knowing about the winter driving penalty. It's been a known factor concerning all vehicles for years and years. It certainly has been all over this site, Edmunds and a variety of other sites including the EPA's own site.

    It concerns all vehicles on the roads. In fact no matter what vehicle you choose next the 'winter penalty' will be worse than what you're experiencing now in your Prius. Don't make me prove this to you again because if I didn't already know the answer I wouldn't have made the statement.

    Most active chatters here praise about the Prius all the time. As far I'm concerned, there is no disclaimer anywhere saying that the forum is meant to fanatics, bashers are not welcome. What makes you and anyone else applicable think that I have not the right to tell how much the Prius is beyond anything reasonable for a decent mean of transportation? Think about it. Asking me to stop criticizing the Prius and describing my disappointments is like asking you to move on and stop praising it. What's the difference? We are all customers of Toyota and the chat is a open place for discussion. You guys should thank me for bringing a difference perspective to the table instead of standing for the car no matter what.

    Now, you can't be seroius about the winter MPG drop. I know every car has it, my other cars always got about 5% drop in the winter, but 30%!!! Come on... Back in July chatters were praising a heat recovery system (something like that) that was supposed to do the magic and guess what? The thing is hopeless because ain't doing a difference in the MPG drop! There are plenty of posts and evidence that the 2010 Prius loose efficiently disproportionally greater than regular cars in the winter, any car. A lot more!

    When you were interested in improving your Prius, a lot of folks tried to work with you but it was not enough. It happens . . . but

    If I thought there were ever going to be any attempt to optimize your Prius, I would be there. But you've pretty well decided it doesn't make you happy and I'm fine with that. By the same token, speech may be free but listening has never been compulsory.

    I just wanted to remind folks that "UserCP" has an "Ignore user" list. It is the CB equivalent of squelch and can easily improve the signal-to-noise ratio.

    Don't take this personal, "Indyking," as you have at least done the experiment ... you've tried the Prius. That it doesn't meet your requirements, well sometimes life is that way.

    If you're pretending that you can't get more than 35 mpg in winter driving in the flat Midwest then you don't belong in a Prius. It's beyond you.

    I can't get lower than 40 mpg in Feb on I95, at an avg speed of 75 mph, in 25 deg temps, uphill into the Catskills/Adirondacks from sealevel going into the prevailing weather. Reversing that trip in the same weather I average 45 mpg.

    And that's on my 2005 with 100,000+ miles on it. So if you can't match those numbers with your 2010 which is 10% better than mine, then you are beyond trainable and don't deserve the vehicle. Sell it and move on, stop whining. As I said if I didn't already know the answer I wouldn't have posted the comment. It's called experience.
