$500 off (x2) seems reasonable and I'd expect that's as much as most dealers will give away.

But people think that the Prius has dropped by $5000+ and that is definitely definitely not true. Nooooo sir-reee.

I bought my III last Saturday and it seemed like a good time to buy. I did most of negotiating with the internet manager and then just had to negotiate my trade when I went in. My price was just above invoice which was a lot better than I was expecting based on previous price quotes.

Our salesman did admit foot traffic was down at the dealership but they had plenty of people looking at the Prius. In fact after I test drove mine someone else was wanting to take that same one out for a test drive!

In December I paid $33048 for the car. Tonight the AAA price is $31204.

Dealers don't pay invoice for the cars. They get a kickback from the manufacturer. Consumer electronics also work like this.

I'm in the market for a Prius V w/AT. Been to two different dealers already - one before all the media blitz and one after. All I got for my troubles was approximately $300 off the first dealer's quote and lots of hand-waving when I tried to use the recent negative publicity to my advantage. I feel like an nice person but am planning to return to the first dealer and try to get them to agree to a substantial discount (hopefully close to the $2k I'm hearing about from other posts) again using the negative (perhaps unjust) publicity to my advantage. Funny nobody cries foul when consumers do this, yet everyone yells when gasoline stations substantially increase fuel prices when media sensationalism depicts a low supply situation and get called "price-gouging".

Harold, you're working hard, not smart. The AAA price for zip code 11790 is $31933. If you want to save more buy the car in Maryland.

Well, I just got laughed out of a Toyota dealership. Given all the uncertainty these days especially with the recall now of the 2010 Prius, I thought I would be in a great position to get a good bargain. Boy was I wrong. First, the Prius that had on the lot for me while I was waiting for my financial situation to settle down, was sold 3 days ago (supposedly at sticker price, but I'll never know). So when I offered $25,000 plus my 2001 Volkswagen Golf that they appraised at $3000 but I feel is worth more in the vicinity of $3,500, the salesman basically laughed at me and showed me the door. So, sadly, the answer is, now is not necessarily the perfect window to buy a Prius. While you might get a decent deal, say $1-$2k off MSRP, they are certainly nowhere near desperate enough to take a loss on a Prius as they apparently still have plenty of customers...
