I received electronic notification today about the ABS Actuator ECU Update for 2010 Prius. I emailed the dealership tonight to schedule the update. I have been so pleased with 50+ mpg but am concerned that the update will negatively impact gas mileage. Does anyone have any info relating to the fix and fuel efficiency?

No Change in MPG, you will still get 25 miles per gallon...

Seriously, if this is only an ABS ECU software update, you shouldn't see any change in fuel efficiency. ABS only comes into play when you are braking on a slick road where the ABS system detects that your wheels are not turning (or should I say slowing) at the same rate. ABS is typically only activited < 1 % of the time you are braking,

Fixing the bug is more likely to increase mpg, not decrease. The abs was over sensitive going to hydrolyic early. That said I would not expect to notice the change either way.

Suppose the change activates the brakes with less pedal pressure. This would reduce regeneration, slightly reducing fuel economy, shorten brake life, and contribute to global warming (friction from the brakes).

My butt gyro is really old and not really reliable anymore.

When it felt the sensation of bad brake feel (reduced braking at transition for those that don't speak euphamism). It felt as if my tire should not be slipping. A later activation (the tire stopping instead of just slowing) would likely be the corrective firmware. Then increased friction braking to match the regenerative would improve brake feel, while actually stopping the car faster. Neither would reduce mpg. As keith said even if it does get more sensitive it would be such a small percentage of the time to not be significant. I'm sure someone will attempt to measure it, and I would bet the deviation would not be statictically significant.

Then again when I pass gas I think it smells like flowers. There are those that spread some fud that people were making up the defect. And these people included fud that it would decrease mpg or increase l/km. If you belive these people that it won't make it safer, brake better, then feel free to not get the fix, um, I mean fake software that only hurts your milage.

Wait, PriusPhile, you threw a tantrum over this whole recall thing, even going so far as threatening to start a class action lawsuit and now you're concerned about the hit to mpg?

Fellow forum members, why are you taking this person seriously?

I wanted a fix already and I really didn't want to be sold a car with braking issues (known by Toyota in October when the car was purchased). I did not threaten to call a class action lawsuit. I asked if there was discussion of one. I LOVE my Prius and am saddened that it is sitting in my garage right now. Safety first.

Please do not make personal attacks at me. I am an earnest person. Are you a 2010 Prius owner who has experienced braking issues? If not, stop defending the brand (unless employed by Toyota) and let's keep MOVING FORWARD. I am being quite serious.

I appreciate this forum... For example, I originally posted my braking "situation" as a BRAKING FAILURE; soon after I realized that this was not the correct terminology to describe the braking system in question. The PriusChat posts (however rabid or neutral) are a great source of information and feedback. Thank you.

I think this sums it up. Enough said already. Thank you.

    MY NHTSA COMPLAINT:
The brakes on my Prius have failed three times in three weeks in both city and rural driving conditions--two times I was braking while driving down a hill (both under 30 mph) and once while driving on a secondary blacktop road (35 mph). When brake failure occurs, the Prius brakes not only disengage (fail) but the car seems to lunge forward. It's as if I am braking with my foot on the gas pedal and then let up on the brake while the gas pedal is still depressed. It's a nauseating feeling when this happens. I was planning on taking the Prius on a cross-country trip in the spring but will not now because of this braking issue. It is not a safe vehicle. I have great concern for my safety and the safety of others, particularly pedestrian safety at intersections. I am also going to post my complaint on PriusChat.com (online Priusphile community of which I am a member) in hopes that others will come forward with their braking problems to NHTSA, forcing Toyota to fix this problem. I completed a complaint form last week on your site (didn't require VIN number) but since brake failure occurred again today, I realize that this is not an isolated incident. Therefore, I am filing this formal NHTSA complaint.

How can do anything but keep moving forward with my brakes that don't work and my son's car with the sticky accellerator and nice new floormats.

I think they have to change that tag line soon.

It is my understanding that the software fix may increase the number of set bits in the ECU program. I'm worried about the impact of the extra weight. Perhaps someone with a really good scale can weigh their ECU before and after the flash.

In case anyone is taking this post seriously, this one falls under the same category as when W.C. Fields said: "The room was so small that Santa couldn't go 'HO HO HO', he had to go 'HA HA HA'." I'm not sure why "HA" is smaller than "HO", but I like it.

I called my local dealer to schedule appt. They took my name and number so they can call me back when the parts arrive and the techs are trained. It could had mpg's I may need to weigh my whole car before and after to check how much the new part weights.

I am getting the software patch at 1630 today. Hurray! Impressed with how quickly that I am able to schedule recall.

Please be sure to tell us how much better the brakes work. I, for one, am really interested to know if you will even be able to tell the difference or if the feeling you would get during the brake failure is still going to be there.

The roads are icy here so I should be able to tell right away. Thanks for your concern/interest.
