Replacing WRG2 tires after 27,700 miles

    Well my 2009 Prius with 27,700 miles just failed a state inspection due to excessive tire wear. I had put a new set of WRG2s on the Prius before it left the Dealer. Now I'm not too such I want to repeat that again. Can someone please explain to me the up/downside to moving to the Hankook Optimo H727's. I don't quite understand the effects of going from a 185/60/15 to a 195/60/15. My Tire Dealer (a Nokian Man) is telling me that it would be a mistake to change the tire size from the original specs... Thanks in advance...Michael

    Wow, that's really low. Have you had a 4-wheel alignment check lately? The rear is supposedly a trouble spot on our cars.

    If you go to a wider tread then you might notice slightly worsened mpg. Other than that, I don't think it would be a problem to move from 185/65 to 195/60.

    I'm astounded that you got such poor tire mileage with the WRg2. I have had a set on the Prius for ~30k and they seem to have nearly zero tread wear. Have you kept them inflated properly,,,and aligned?

    The tires have been inflated at 42/40 from the first day. No alignment problems. Wear has been even across the tire. I'm willing to try another set. Just a little gunshy.

    I just (two weeks ago) put a set on a Subaru. Very expensive but unstoppable in the snow. What does your Nokian guy say? We can't get Nokians here except through special order from Discount tire, so they don't know anything about them.

    After going through two sets of Goodyear Triple Treds, I made the switch to Hankook 727's.
    The snow traction for the Hankooks is better than the Goodyears.
    Wet pavement traction is also excellent
    The Hankooks are several pounds lighter then the Goodyears.
    Mileage is better than the Goodyears.
    The only slight negative for the Hankooks is the sidewalls have a bit more flex, which I think is due to their lighter weight, AKA less material in the sidewall.
    As far as the size, IMHO the 195x60 is the way to go.
    The best part is the Hankooks are relatively inexpensive, about $310 + installation.

    I reckon something is amiss with your alignment. Those tyres should last 50 to 60 K miles.

    Well after much consideration I've decided to try the WRG2s one more time. Nokian has agreed to credit me 40% per tire bringing the cost down to $72 per tire. I'll have to pay for the remounting etc but those cost would be there no matter what. I'll also have all 4 wheels aligned again just to play it safe. Thanks to all who replied....Michael. Oh, just an fyi....Nokian warrantees the tires for 50K
