Hey so I have a 2001 First Gen Prius. The Transmission is in need of repair. Has anyone in the LA area used other mechanics in the are besides the usual suspects (Hollywood Toyota, Glendale Toyota etc). Would love a reco for other options in the area.

    Thanks

The only two I know of in California are:

Perhaps you might call both and ask them for advice or recommendations.

Many independent shops in the LA area can handle Prius repairs, albeit at different levels. What is the issue with the transmission?

I am being told by HWood Toyota that I need a new transmission (part 30900-47020) which would cost me $3500 just for the New tranny. So now i am looking for other alternatives for a new transmisson, used or rebuilt would be just fine. Started Looking on Ebay for the part. Hwood Toy will do the install if I can find the part.

Keep in mind that most shops, including dealerships, cannot test a used transaxle out of the vehicle. So you will by necessity be taking a bit of a gamble installing a used transaxle.

Bill's Quality Auto Care in Simi Valley can find a used transaxle and handle a transaxle swap.

Thanks for the information. Unfortunatly I am into the Hollywood Toy for a couple hundred for the diagnosis already. So it makes the most sense to me to have them do the install of the used tranny ro recoup that money spent.

Now I am hoping to find a tranny locally for the 2001 Prius part 30900-47020. So if anyone has any leads on that I am open for suggestions and recomendations.

Any 2001-2003 transaxle will do. However, Toyota cannot test the motor windings before installing the transaxle in your vehicle. So you'll be out the labor (probably about a grand) if the unit is faulty.

Bill's Quality Auto Care can test the windings prior to installation.

Steve's Express in Northridge 818-363-8545 is great. He's so honest -- a Buddhist auto repairman! He's been working on my 2001 and 2002 Prius since they went off warranty. I don't think he does transmission work however but perhaps he could give you a recommendation.
