Aftermarket LED's - How To Turn On With Dome Lights

    I would like find the easiest way to have custom LED lights turn on when I open doors, or same time as dome lights.

    I have wiring ready to tap into fuse box under the driver side dash board. However it looks like the dome fuse is under the hood. Is there another fuse there I can use that is only on when the doors are on? If not where is the easiest way to tap into the current lighting from around this area that is active when the door is open?

    I am replying to my own post. After some more searching on Google I found the file

    provides more details on the dome light circuit. (Page 28) Have not posted 5 times to hot link file bove it seems.

    Unfortunately this looks more involved than I hoped, wondering if there is still an easier method.

    I am using a strand of LED lights with no controller, 2 wires one for ground and one for power. I hooked them up to a constant power source to confirm they are working but still would like to hook them up to the dome lights.

    Can you tap into the dome lights? Wire it up along the A-pillar then across the leading edge of the headliner to the front personal & maplights?

    There's another behind the dash, under the steering wheel. I have the JDM footwell lighting and there's a plug somewhere there that I unplugged and plugged into the JDM footwell wiring setup, which then plugs back into the original socket.

    Thanks. The link for the pdf on the sigma auto web site is broken for instructions on the JDM footwell installation. I will look at the steering wheel. That may work great.

    I was looking for lights around the steering wheel until I searched more. I did not even know the buttons on the steering wheel are lit up.

    Are you referring to the lights on the steering wheel, since they would not turn off with the door, or is there another that also comes on with the door I am aware of?

    I'm going to play devil's adocate here... for my education if no other
    reason.

    Is tying into the dome light circuit the right way to go?

    IIRC, there is a whole lot of things besides the dome light already on that
    circuit, like all the other electrical bits in the interior; lights, radio, etc.
    Perhaps more importantly, a handful of ECUs as well. Adding more load
    that might lead to blowing the fuse would be more than just an
    inconvenience.

    I know that LEDs draw less power to begin with. That said, is this the
    best solution, or merely the easiest?

    I'm no e-lek-trik-al wizard, everything I know I've read on PRIUSchat. ;)

    So help me if I'm out in left field... again, or perhaps still! :p

    Ahh.. nono, I mean there is a plug behind the dashboard on the driver's side where I plugged my footwell lighting into. I believe the existing wire that plugs into that socket is the wire that runs to the door courtesy light. I can't remember how thick that wire is but if you can tap into that wire, you'll get your desired results methinks because the door courtesy lights come on when the doors are opened which is what you want occuring with the footwell lights that you're installing, right?

    I wish the PDF was still up song Sigmna's web site. I follow what you are saying now, but I don't know if I can identify the plug behind the dashboard without more information or pictures.

    To answer the post before, I am not sure if tapping into a wire with the dome lights is best nor easiest. I am just trying to find an easy way to have aftermarket interior lights turn on when the rest of the dome/door lights turn on.

    It shouldn't be hard. There are folks here that have installed neon tubes or LED lights as footwell lighting. I don't remember what they tapped into. If you search.... footwell lighting, you might get some results..

    I'll see if I can grab a pic. I don't remember which one it is since I installed it a long time ago but I can probably just find the wire and trace it back to the socket.

    I still have not decided or found best place to wire up these LED's. When I do I will post more. If anyone has some good pictures dash wire I can tap into that would be great.

    I tapped into the key slot light wires when I installed my footwell LEDs. It was easy to get to since you only have to remove the lower dash panel under the steering wheel and the wires are right there. The key slot lights turn on and off with the dome light so it works perfectly for the footwells.

    I decided not to install anything that involves connecting to existing wiring or too radical. (In light of recent items in the news, even if no recall notices are out for my year's model)

    can anyone help me to find or locate the done lights circuit from the driver side under dashboard. "pics" what lines should i connect to get power from the Dome circuit ??
