car passed 5k recently and oil change reminder keeps popping up, and I plan on changing at 10k with synthetic oil. How do I disable that annoying message?

Recently I read that with synthetic oil you can wait 10,000 miles between oiul changes. The artical included the caveat that the 5,000 mile change waring goes on after 5,000 mile and can only be turned off for the next 5,000 miles by the dealer.

ON PRE 2010 models there is a method to turn it off by the vehicle owner. I doubt very much that it is a dealer requirement post 2009. Do a search and I am sure you can turn off the light yourself. If not, perhaps with an OBD II diagnostic tool (quite inexpensive) you can accomplish this as well.

From page 428 of my copy of the Owner's Manual:

After changing the engine oil (U.S.A. only)

The oil change system should be reset. Perform the following steps:

    1. Turn the “POWER†switch OFF with the trip meter A shown.

    2. Turn the “POWER†switch ON with the MPH or km/h button
    (→P. 183) held down.

    3. Keep pressing the button until the odometer indicates “000000†and the multi-information display indicates that the reset is complete.

I highly recommend downloading a PDF of the Owner's Manual (and Navigation Manual if you have Navigation). You can do word and phrase searches and usually find what you're looking for much faster than leafing through the 600+ pages of the hard copy Owner's Manual. See my post below:
