Yes, I have the "squeak" upon a rolling start. Super annoying. Started day one. Hasn't stopped. I thought for a long time there was something really wrong. Now I just live with it.

    (1) Squeaky brakes in reverse.
    (2) Brake problems on rough road/streets. Hit a pothole or even a small area of rough pavement and not only do the brakes not seem to work, the car lunges forward. Grrr.

    1. I've noticed that when the brakes (discs) get wet during a wash they show rust spot VERY quickly (within an hour or so). After I drive for a few minutes the discs get cleaned off and no more squeaks.

    2. There's a recall for that.

    Re: Shaking Prius 2010

Sounds like a tire that is out-of-round; no amount of conventional balancing will solve this problem.

Take the car to a tire guy with a road-force balancer, and have them check all four for runout. I'm betting you have one or more that are not round enough for this very sensitive chassis.

Another possible suspect is an internal construction problem with one of the tires [belt or ply separation].

I would not expect the average Toyota dealer to have the equipment or expertise to solve this problem - find a tire dealer with the right stuff, and you should find a solution. I've had good luck with our local America's Tire shop, but wherever you are, there are good alternatives. Let us know how it turns out.

I love the idea of the Prius and was so excited to get mine but I'm having a ton of issues and am concerned. Here's the problems I've had. Some are mild and I wouldn't even mention them except that when combined it adds up to a lot.

    1. Breaks are TERRIBLE in the snow! The car skids all over the place and the breaks barely work. I got the breaks fixed with the recall so hopefully that solves the problem.
    2. Several times it sped up over potholes, even with my foot firmly on the break. Scary!
    3. Violent shaking at start up on one occasion.
    4. "Slippery" sign comes on at a stand still.
    5. Door doesn't lock like it should when touched more often than not. Maybe it's because of the cold?
    6. The other day my doors locked themselves while I was driving.

Mine is off by two MPH too. It, also, efects the odometer. When you hit 100,000 miles you will have gone fewer real miles but your warranty is done. This really bugs me.

I've been working my car for several weeks now and observe the following items in the list. Car build date is January, 2010:

Item... AC Display is Cloudy/Blurry. I can see this to some degree in my display. Maybe when they treated the interior they got some of the stuff on the plastic and that didn't do it any good. My VIN number is past the effective range of the TSB.

Item... Red Arrow in Energy Monitor Hard to See In Daylight. This remains true and it isn't easy to see under any conditions imho. And it is true of the HSI display too. It is likely an engineering cosmetic flub that will be fixed when hell freezes over.

Item... Rattle Noises From Various Sources Inside the Cabin. For my Prius this is limited to one very intermittent rattle in the area of the right front door panels/posts/right dashboard.

Adding... Gray Fog Light Covers on Barcelona Red Metallic body sucky match. You can do better then this Toyota. Paint them Barcelona Red Metallic please or add some slightly protruding machine gun barrels.

I think I have a new problem with my 2010 Gen III Prius. The headlights do not turn off automatically. It was just happened on my car couple days ago. Unfortunetly, I didn't realize that when it was first time happened which caused the 12V battery dead. So I had to jump start to get my car move. I am thinking if it relates the relay switch problem. I am sure the dealer will be able to tell me what causes the problem once I bring my car back.

I'm going to give it a rest because after talking to my dealer it is very doubtful Toyota will actually do anything about any of the design problems that bother me. If they do that's great. If they don't I don't want to be constantly reminded of them. This is a great summary list where I can track the problem status since all my concerns are listed here but one and the sooner I can forget about that one the better off I'll be for it.

Problem: Ghost image on speed display
Description: Double Vision on Speed Display
Solution: Pending, although some have observed that the intensity of the ghosting effect depends on the driver's head position.
Last observed on a Prius built on: June 2009

I think this problem should be removed (or revised?) since I don't think the Gen III came out in June 2009--did it?

Edit... Okay, I'm wrong, the car was out in June, 2009. So the Prius is really a 2009.5 car. :) I still haven't noticed the double image problem and I don't think I want to look hard for it again 'cause I doubt it will be fixed. Sorry to bring it up.

Edit... Okay, I can barely see the double image but thinking nothing of it at present.

Is this really true? If it is, I would think that the odometer being inaccurate is a much bigger issue than the mph reading slightly higher than it's actually going.

Indeed. There was a class action against Honda for that reason. Check Parts & Service Operations - Warranty Blank .

Note that age of tires has an influence on measured speed and odometer. If you loose 3/4 inch in tire diameter over the years, measured speed (and distance) is affected by as much as 2,5% on a 15-inch tire. What would be required is a GPS chip that would periodically calibrate the odometer and speed gauge. (It is already in the list of suggested improvements).

Interesting - I didn't know that. Isn't it illegal to for the odometer to be inaccurate or are there some acceptable tolerances?

Apparently the speedometer display is intentionally biased to meet "UN-ECE Regulation No. 39". - see http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-ii-...edometer-giving-false-reading.html#post472795
The link it contains no longer works, though.

There is also some interesting info on speedometer error at: Speedometer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It is possible that the odometer follows has the same bias.

I have the same sppedometer odometer issue in my Tacoma, except that the discepany is 5%. The dealer checked it with a GPS and agreed, and they put IN WRITING that my warrantee would be honored for an additional 1,800 miles. Try it with your dealer!

Built January, 2010 with standard 15" wheels and new Bridgestone tires. Mileage check against Garmin Oregon 400t GPS:

Going south 19.1 miles on Trip A the 400t read 19.15 mi.
Going north 15.6 miles on Trip A the 400t read 15.59 mi.
Going west 20.8 miles on Trip A the 400t read 20.92 mi.
Going east 22.0 miles on Trip A the 400t read 22.00 mi.

Result...There is very little odometer error noted on short distances. It would be interesting to repeat the same test in several years and over much longer distances.

During the drive I held speeds ranging from 35 to 55 mph using cruise control and the cars speedometer. I then compared these speeds to the 400t GPS and noted that with ups and downs in the road I would get speeds ranging from 0.0 or so to 1.5 or so mph less then the cars speedometer. On several very flat stretches I seemed to hold around a 0.7 mph on the GPS below the car's speedometer value. I take this as a pretty good average to use. This means that if I drive say 55 mph by the car's speedometer I actaully would be driving on the safe side around 54.3 mph. The 400t GPS _always_ read less then the car's speedometer.

Although there seems to be some measured error in the speedometer I consider it negligible. I'll have to take a much longer trip with the 400t GPS to see how the long distances amount to but frankly I don't think I care.

You can update the "last seen on" data for the FM radio reception problem, as I've flagged it to Toyota and my dealer following purchase of my Prius on 31st March 2010
