    From what I've seen and been able to find, not really.

    I know I've had mine for over two years now (exact length of ownership is in the signature line) and never had anything ever happen like this.

    I'm one of those that 'just about anything is possible' but with as many Prius' that are on the road today, if there was an issue or several cases, you'd sure think you would have heard of it by now.

    Especially since the Prius is the 'poster child' for Hybrid vehicles.

    YES! My left foot twitched and the car accelerated! Must blame Toyota!

    Of course not! This is just all very silly. The most likely part in the car to fail is the nut behind the wheel. Please investigate that FIRST!

    Now I suppose it's -possible- to trap the accelerator pedal with a floor mat, but that is the OWNERS responsibility. Toyota supplies the clips, and the dealer should have clipped the mat in when he delivered the car. If he didn't it's -HIS- responsibility, not Toyota's. In my case, I have that mat clipped in, and on top of it I have (in winter) a Weathertech mat. -I- take responsibility to ensure that that combination -can't- trap the pedal, and it didn't in all the tests I've done on it.

    Prius didn't get the corroding throttle pedal modules. They all got the Japanese ones.

    To say the electronics could fail and cause this is just silly. If it fails it stays failed, and that will show up in subsequent tests, and so far, we haven't heard of that. Even a firmware glitch would show up. Don't you all think Toyota have been testing that ad infinitem? THEY DO want to find out what's happening. It's necessary for sales. ;)

    2006 with 30K and no problems BUT I request clarification if I may...Todays paper said "the Prius is designed to shut down if the brakes are applied while the gas pedal is depressed"

    1. Does the gas pedal have to be all the way to the floor for this to go into effect?
    2. Is this true for all Gen II Priuses
    3. Will it damage the Prius if pushing BRAKE while the the car is going at a high speed? Not that i care but am curious.

    Looking forward to today's Toyota announcement!

    The Prius does not shut down when the brake and gas are pressed together. Try it at a stoplight. The engine revs up a little but (maybe 1500 RPM?) and the car goes nowhere.

    The car will stop if the gas is pressed first, then the brake is applied.

    What you describe is called "force charging" and is allowed by design.

    As for my experience, no UA in the Prius at 23k.

    I have not had any UA issues with 153,000 miles although I did have some minor braking issues when the rear drums were not cleaned on a regular basis. In wet conditions the rear drums sometimes sounded like there was metal to metal contact and the ABS would come on no matter how easy I applied the brakes. I take the car in for a brake check and they would clean the rears and it would be good as new.

    There is one thread started last May, where there was a claimed unintended acceleration with a Gen 2 Prius.

    As mentioned above, it won't work by design when the car is stopped. It does work though. I have tested at approx 40 mph.

    To try it - accel to some road speed, floor the accel pedal with left foot, then brake firmly with right foot while holding the accel pedal down. Listen to the engine noise; it will drop rpm from high rev down to idle speed within a sec or two. My car will come to a complete stop from 40 mph in less than 3 sec. Once stopped, you can rev the engine but the brake will hold the car stationary.

    2004 with nearly 95,000 miles. Only time I had an issue was last April when my floor mat pushed against the gas pedal. This is before ALL the hoopla and I had the presence of mind to realize what was happening. I pulled the mat back and then hooked it properly when I stopped the car. Only reason this happened was because the car wash clerk failed to secure the mat after cleaning the car.

    unless,of course, they failed to mention "above a certain speed"

    I am not confused, I am sorry you are. There does not seem to be any confusion on the part of actual Prius owners here, they all report no UA in their Prius. (the topic of this thread)

    I am sorry a newspaper article confuses you, I have found newspapers poor at technical details myself.

    No confusion here. Applying the brakes while the gas pedal is depressed WILL cause the gas engine to power down AT ALL SPEEDS in the Prius.

    If the gasoline engine is going a few thousand RPMs while the front disc brakes are heavily engaged, this will over-rev and BURN OUT the MG1 electric motor in the transaxle. A destroyed transaxle is a very handy way to slow down the car.

    So the Prius has a computer system that cuts gas engine power to protect the transaxle from getting destroyed when both the gas pedal and brake pedals are pressed at the same time, and a transaxle that will get destroyed (and consequently stop the car) if somehow the computer system fails to cut the gas engine power when both pedals are pressed.

    Either way, your Prius WILL stop when you press both pedals at the same time. It will stop normally if the hybrid computer is working, or it will stop via transaxle self-destruction if the hybrid computer is NOT working.

    EDITED TO ADD: For the record, no problems in my '07 since I bought it new back then.
