    Hi all,

I've been a lurker for a while and have been so appreciative of the input here. I figured I'd see if anyone can give me any advice.

I was the proud owner of a 2004 Prius with 115,000 miles on it until I was rear ended and my car was totalled. Now I have to get myself another car. I was so fond of my first Prius, I want to get another one. Of course, I won't be getting tons of money for my totalled car, so I'm looking at a used 2008.

This car is a 2008, package #6 with 43,000 miles. It has the carfax, 1 owner guarantee and is certified. It's been on the lot for over 3 months and when we went to test drive it, the battery was dead, but no problems once it was jumped.

I can get it for $16,500 out the door.

Does that sound like a good deal?

    Sorry about your 2004.

Your deal seems OK for the package 6. By OTD, do you mean taxes are included? 43K seems like alot for a 1 - 2 year old car. The downside is losing the manufacturer's warranty. You're still covered for the powertrain for 17 more K, but if any non-covered system fails (because of wear) you're out of luck. Is this a Toyota certified vehicle from a Toyota dealer.

Thanks for your quick response, KLear.

Yes, I mean the car, taxes, and fees total $16,500. It is a Toyota Certified Vehicle from a Toyota dealer.

Toyota "certified" bumps your powertrain up to 7 years/100K. You are ineligible for the Toyota new car extended warranty - were you thinking of extended coverage? You may be able to get them to decertify it and lower the price... What is the price before the taxes and title are included? I might ask for a better deal (mainly because the market does not seem favorable for used Prius right now). Check autotrader.com or cars.com and do a search for 2008's with similiar mileage so you can see what others might be paying.

Seems like the prices I was finding when I bought our 2008 a few weeks back. We paid a tad more (15995 + taxes) but it has less than 30,000 miles. I saw 2 2008's listed at 14,500 and 15,200 that had between 40,000 and 50,000 miles. Out the door that would work to be about the price you just paid. I would say you got a decent deal and the dealer didn't lose his pants.

Just my opinion but it seems a tad high based on what I paid for pkg 5 and the high mileage on the car you're looking it. On the plus side you should feel more secure from buying a dealer certified car and having the warranty bumped up. Sorry about your 2004 and hope you enjoy your "new" one.
You may want them to replace the 12V battery (if it is still the original one) as part of your deal and try to negotiate a better price. Car dealers make good money on used cars and the fact they had it on the lot for 3 months gives you leverage. They want to move them out as fast as possible:).
