I just thought I would drop in and give a hey howdy since I signed on. My wife and I are presently looking for a new, more fuel effecient, reliable car. We presently both drive 1989 Ford Mustangs both of the V8 flavor. As one can see the gas bills on these things are killing us. After some initial looking around I found out about the Honda Insight and the Toyota Prius. Given that we are used to driving something that can actually carry a few bags of groceries and several people, the Insight left my short list real fast despite the high mpg numbers. Another aspect was the fact that a Prius doesn't look funky and is mroe along the lines of a regular car in stying. We'll probably be popping in and out, lurking, and asking a few questions that we don't find the answers to about this car. I thought it would be the polite thing to at least say hey to everyone first though.

and do yourself a favor. Go buy a Prius. After 15,000 miles this is still the most wonderful motoring experience I have ever enjoyed.

The quality is awesome, and this is THE cool car to have.

This is one fab site, too.

I've been looking around in here for a few minutes and definatly looks like an informative place. The more I read about this car the more I like it. I saw one a few days ago at the post office and it got me thinking a little more seriously about it.

Welcome., this car will save you money., it is not too expensive, and driving what was it ?? v8 mustangs...Oh my god., you'll cut your fuel bill by at least 2/3 and that is one car, mind you. I am conservative, and all my peer laughed at me., eh eh they get 200 miles a tank and spend 45.00 bucks, and I get 400 miles a tank and spend 20 bucks..see who laughs last. A couple are starting to want to see my tank data on the DVD screen thing now at work! They all thought this was a tree-hugger car, and it can be..but it also can be a money saver for a conservative like me who thinks our gas hunger in this country is becoming a drain and a strategic problem. Heck let's say the GOVT really messed up and HAD to ration gas on 10 gallons a week per registered car..what would you do? Only with this car, and maybe one of the Honda's you could still drive to your heart's content and still make the ration.

Yeap, I'll be the first to admit att his stage of my life a V8, gas sapping car, isn't the best choice to have. I'll admit I'm one of those that love speed and power that comes with a larger engine car like ours. Unfortunatly, our bank account doesn't seem to like the taste too much. At present time we usually fill up both cars about 3 times a month for $20 a car. That's about $120 a month in gas for two vehicles that are not even reliable enough to drive out of town. One of the reasons we have yet to return to Texas for a vist. The other reason being that even if they did drive that far the gas alone would kill us on a trip that far. It's in the neghborhood of 1400 miles from here to there. Given the best we've got on a tank of gas in either Mustang is 190 miles it's no surprise the cost involved with going there would be prohibative.

At this point I'm willing to trade speed for efficiency and reliability. I looked at the hybrid Honda Accord and Civic but didn't see the same milage numbers the Prius or Insight delivered. It only made me wonder more, what's the point? Outside of a cleaner burning vehicle there would be no real advantage for a few extra mpg compaired to the gasoline models of the same nameplate.

You are right on the Hybrids coming out for the bigger cars, like the Ford Escape and the Lexus and the likes, even Camry and Accord don't provide the substantial gas savings to pay back for the initial outlay.

BUT Insight (by HONDA) and the Toyota Prius are the only two that do. And the initial cost, if you leave out the Fancy stuff, is anywhere from $22,000 to $24,000, that is not costly with regards to todays cars and trucks. 1400 miles in the Prius will run you about 4 tanks, we will say and assume a 40-45 MPG although lots have done better, so you are looking at about $90.00 for 1400 miles. I found that it was cheaper to drive the Prius to NY then to take a plane..I live in Texas. Few of the current crops of "hybrids" deliver, look at the GM truck, it give virtually no savings, just has power outlets in the back..and most of the other hybrids run $7000-$15,000 more.

[font=Comic Sans MS:7863a2577f]Hi there, Sileny Jizda. Welcome to PriusChat!

The Prius has a lot of pickup for it's engine size, because the electric motors can kick in the torque when you stomp the pedal. MPG goes down the drain, but you get off the line fast.

Now I'm sure you are a good law-abiding citizen and never exceed the speed limit, but I've seen 90 on my speedo, and it wasn't kilometers. The other hybrids, other than the Insight, are mostly using hybrid technology as a "green turbocharger." You get a torque kick from the electric when you want it.

The other thing to consider about the Prius is its extremely low emission levels. We all have to breathe, and the Prius helps us breathe easier.[/font:7863a2577f]

    Hey and welcome to PriusChat.

I guess I don't need to repeat what's said above so I'll chip in and say, go for a test drive (and not a short one dictated by the salesman but an extended one where you choose the route) and get comfortable with the car. Don't worry about the screen and such but get use to the driving aspect first. You'll have plenty of time to play with the screen inside the showroom. =)

Remember that YMMV (your mileage may vary) depending on your driving style, topography, climate and traffic. It will apply to all cars but is more noticeable with the Prius, possibly because we actually take note of the difference lol.

LOL, the screen in the Prius doesn't scare me one bit. I'm a tech nut so any new tech is good tech if it's proven to be stable. I used to work in an aluminum extrusion plant and did design work on AutoCAD so the tech in this car won't scare me. Now the wife is another issue entirely. She's almost my opposite when it comes to this stuff. Heck, I still have to show her how to use the scanner occasionaly.

Speed really isn't an issue either. As much as I love my power in the Mustangs the time has come to be responsible. I figure as long as the car doesn't feel like I'm trying to push it uphill it's fine. From what I'm reading in here it shouldn't really be a problem either. Thanks again for the warm reception.

    :D

LOL, well, technically yes to that situation. The place I work for hasn't had any work for some time now since it's an upstart company and no one else is hiring around these parts. At least where it's reasonable to drive my car to anyways.
