My '01 prius (55k miles) just died 2 days ago while driving. It was 95F out and the AC was cranked. It wouldn't restart for about an hour and while waiting for AAA, I managed to restart it, get the gas engine going (and charging the battery like crazy) and drive it the 1 mile home.

It started up fine this morning (no error ) and I took it to the dealer and they say the internal error code says we ran out of gas and drove it with no gas. It had a full tank and we have never come close to running out of gas (usually fill on 2 bars). I'm not sure if they believe me. This problem happened once before about 2 years ago and again they said we ran out of gas. Anyone have any idea why this might be happening?

We did get the battery terminal service recall done -- we had been getting error codes all the time from that when it was cold and damp out and the gas engine would quit right at start up, we could then restart immeditaely and everything would work fine.

Meanwhile, my wife is worried about driving the car if they don't find the real problem...Any feedback would be appreciated.

I know our '04 is different from your '01 in lots of ways-but Toyota tried to pull the same thing with me. The car died on a busy street with two bars remaining, then proceeded to go completely nuts. Toyota tried to say it was my fault and it was not covered under warranty. A couple calls to corporate changed their tune. Don't let them get away with saying you ran out of gas! It's a way out for their service dept. but for your pride, wallet, and trust in the safety of your car, push this issue!
