    Hi guy and girls,

My excuses if i post this in the wrong part of the forum.
I have been looking for a car to replace for a while now and the prius was on my wanting list. So i have been looking around for a second hand prius, after some searching me and my gf finally found one with a decent price 12k euro. We have been there to do a test drive everything seems fine and it drive as it should. So we consider taking it as it was a pretty good and attractive car with handfrees/ navigation jbl sounds etc. ( i guess this is a business edition) odo is 30k km.
Btw its a privat seller "he said the first owner is a senior".

So after long discussing we finally got it today our Prius. During our trip home we get some error warnings.
"Master Warning (Triangle with !), VSC, and Brake warning lights came on, the MFD displayed "Problem" temporarily and now shows a car-shaped icon with a "!" through it in the upper left-hand corner of the MFD. Additionally, cruise control has stopped working."

So we took it to toyota dealer the check the car and came up with some code.

    p3000
    p0a85
    c1310
    c1378

I called the seller and he said he didn't know there is any error or anything wrong with the car, and promise me to call the actually seller and get something to fix for me.

I was hooping to have a car with out any problems for this price, but it came with some problem i am soo desperate and dont know what to do .
So please help me out with this problem.

Thanks alot and hope to hear from you guys sooon

The last 2 codes (C1210 and C1278) are odd because they don't belong with the others. All the other codes point at the Battery ECU or HV Battery. I would test the 12V battery to make sure it is good. A bad 12V battery can generate some weird codes.

Thanks alot for you reply, currently i am feeling like someone is cutting me in peaces. Well i went to the toyota dealer thats what they gave me as the error code, and they said if i am going to repair it it could run up to thousand of euro's. When buying a car this pricy i am not expecting to receive any error or whatever i just expect it to drive well.

I am all new to the automate / hybrid thing so is this a big problem? shouldnt i be driving around with this error ?

Btw you said (C1210 and C1278) are odd does it mean its not a big deal? sorry for my poor english as its not my native languages.

And about Battery ECU or HV Battery how do i test it?(i dont have any knowledge of car inside).

sorry for all the question and.

Hope you can help me out again thanks

In the past a lot of PriusChatters have found that replacing the 12 volt battery has fixed many problems. If the previous owner is telling the truth and didn't know of any codes or problems I would replace the 12 volt battery before doing any other work on the car.

After you have a good 12 volt battery in the car ask the dealer to clear all codes and drive the car to see if they recure. The HSD computers require a good 12 volt supply to function properly.

Thanks for you quick reply. Well since yesterday the warning appeared i have been doing some digging. (not the technical parts)

Because its a pretty big amount of money we spent on it we hope it should function atleast 80% but turn it out its not. Me and my Gf are both pretty down atm, 12k euro is alot for both of us as student.

So i dig futher into the car history and called the dealer where the owner got it from. I was stunned and shock what he told me about this car. The dealer said the car has had an accident in the pass where it land into some water. The old owner doesnt want to repair it so he/she declare it as a waste and gave up on the car. The dealer even advice me to call the police to ask for help.

So i did call the police and they pointed me to some agency who's handling this cases where buyers are scammed.(its called juridische loket in dutch i think its called legal desk)
But since its weekend its hard to get intouch with them.

So after all this scam action, I would like to get my money back so i can get a real car. But seeing this happen i would never ever going to some privat seller anymore.

But the question is what are the chance i am getting my money back.

Is there anyone with familiar situation or know someone with the same situation? I would like to know the outcome of this so i could be prepared for the worse case.

    Thanks for your reading

This unfortunate situation points out the importance of having a dealer thoroughly inspect a car, and if possible researching its history, before you buy. Good luck. If there is justice you will get a complete refund.

That is a question for people familiar with the legal system and consumer protection laws of your country. Because PriusChat has few participants in the Netherlands, I don't think we are likely to find an adequate answer for you.

While you can try the International forum here, you are much more likely to find the help you need from some form of Consumer Protection agency or general automotive or consumer forums within the Netherlands.

Thanks you all for the quick reply i really appreciate.
I love the prius after the scam i still love Prius but it feel like all the saving was just for this scam. In case i lose this lawsuit i will be left with a car that is not fully functioning.

Btw while those warning sign are on am i still able to drive? As for now the warning signs is on but the car still drive normally.

One thing that bothered me is the Hatch wont open from outside no matter what i do. Or there is something i havent done as it should be. But normally i have the key in my pocket walk up to the car and the car will automatically open it, so i assume it should do the same if i want to open up the hatch right?

And another weird thing is there are 2 button 1 left below the steering wheel and one right close to the mfd both without names. Do you know what they are for ? As i cant find it in the manual.

    Thanks alot

This is highly unfortunate. It sounds like your car is suffering from bad wiring harness connections due to the water damage.

Well, if the car drives "normally" then you can drive it for now. However it will not be reliable and you should not be surprised if/when it fails on you.

There should be a Smart antenna module located behind the rear bumper cover. Maybe this was damaged or removed when the car was in an accident.

What needs to be told?

Depress the switch located above the license plate (switch is covered by a black rectangular piece of rubber).

I tried that and it didnt work, the only i hear is the clicking sounds inside the car when the rubber is depressed.

It looks like its trying to make contact but it just wont open. Is there anything else i should know or is the 12 volt dying thats why the hatch is not opening?

Well, if you can hear a clicking sound then the hatch lock should be released. Push up hard on the hatch.

You can also try the mechanical hatch lock release: you'll need to crawl into the hatch area after lowering the rear seat back. Remove the hatch folding floor, then find a little rectangular opening in the black plastic tray over the spare tire. This opening faces the rear of the car. Remove the cover over the opening and find the hatch lock release which is a shiny piece of metal.

If you can't open the hatch, maybe you'll need to seek Toyota dealer assistance.

Patrick thanks alot for quit reply.

Well tried to push the rubber thing as hard as i can and pull the hatcher up but nothing happen, but as you said if i open from the inside out with the metal thing it does open. But does this mean everytime i want to open the hatch i have to craw inside the car to open it ?

OK, it sounds like the "back door lock assembly" needs to be replaced since it is not releasing electrically. This is located beneath the "deck trim cover rear" on the hatch floor.

The "back door lock striker assembly" mounted on the hatch engages with the door lock assembly when the hatch is closed.

Hi Wingye. The hatchback latch is not a mechanical linkage, it is electrically operated via a soleniod. So the thing that you press to open it is just an electrical push button. It seems that your car may have many electrical problem due to its previous accident and that is going to cause you a lot of problems.

BTW. What method did you use to pay for the car? Can you stop the cheque or get the bank to dishonor the payment or something. That guy who sold it really robbed you badly. Can you at least confront him and see what his story is?

    Hi Uart,

well i know the whole story behind the accident from the dealer himself. They told me everything in details. Unfortunately i paid the car in cash only so its going to be hard to charge back. And since the guy who sold me the car refuse to pickup his phone i dont have any other way to contact him.

Well i engaged a lawyer for this situation and hope it will get solved.
