I have a Prius IV with Nav and I know you can turn the Nav screen off by push display button and touch off. The Nav screen will become blank.

However, I can still hear the DVD spinning and making noise while I am driving. So is it possible to turn the DVD system off?
    I mean gracefully.

I could eject the DVD disk out and I am pretty sure the Nav will not make spinning noise any more, but what if I want to use the Nav again? Then I have to put the DVD disk in again. Quite inconvenient.

Thank you very much in advance.

Wow. I stand in awe at your ability to fly speck and nit pick. Seriously, I have never heard the dvd spinning in my car. What does it sound like? Have you considered turning on the radio?

Believe me. Even if the radio is on, the Nav system seems still working. The DVD is making noise. Too bad it is not a hard drive based system.
But without the ability to turn it off, the life time of the dvd nav system is shortened. Besides, it is making fairly loud clicking sound even if I am listening to the radio. Not nit picking, but just an observation that looking for a solution. The Nav manual did not say anything about how to turn off the nav system.

Thank you for your reply. At least I got A reply:)

I can hear it while in my garage with no radio on and no other ambient noise. Other than that, it is not heard.

As for a solution, take the dvd out. Sorry but what else can I say, there is no solution, that's how it is...

Have you taken it to dealer and complained?

Not yet. Just want to know from here on the forum to make sure if this is a feature instead of a defect.

Basically, the problem is turn off the Nav screen does not shut off the Nav DVD system. I can hear the noise while driving. I thought it were a feature. But strange that no body else encountered this.

    Thanks.:):)

I do not see wasting a day or morning/afternoon at the dealer worth it. What can they possibly do? People always say go to the dealer. Why? If it's not something actually broken or if a TSB has not been issued what can they do? In this situation, I can tell you nothing. It's like people who are running to their dealers for the 2010 brake 'problem'. There has been no fix sent to the dealers yet, no one has been notified to bring their cars in. What do you expect them to do, hack into the computer and somehow change the code with no knowledge? If you want Toyota to hear your concern (and I am not speaking directly to you, the OP of this post so please don't take it personal) call their Customer Experience Center (800-331-4331) and let them know what is bothering you. But I see no point in losing time at a service center when it means nothing... Unless you're just trying to get a complaint noted because you see that as a way to 'cash in' down the road because of recent events...

I think this is a case of one person being extraordinarily picky...you hear the DVD spinning?!? How? Even when listening to the radio?

Thanks a lot! I heard the DVD whirring and clicking this morning and probably will hear it forever now. Frankly, I think I will forget it soon enough and I think that we might have far more important issues.

I would say forget about it, but it's your dime.

WOW ! Removing the Nav DVD and having to insert it again when it's needed ! That's right Up There with having to clean bird droppings off the car. Can't the Nav system just communicate with you by brain waves ? What was Toyota thinking ? You should demand a refund.

Give it a little while and the dash rattles will drown out the DVD sound - problem solved!

I have pretty good hearing and I thought I had picked out all the squeaks and rattles there were but I've never heard the DVD unit running. Are you sure you don't have an extra noisy DVD? Have the dealer take you for a ride in another Prius with Nav and see if you can hear it.

Maybe because I was using a copy of the original Nav DVD disk. I inserted the original DVD and the noise seems reduced.

Sometimes the copied disks are out of balance or slightly out of round. This leads to more noise.

I completely agree with you, jzhou. I, too, hear the annoying repeated sound of the disc being read...I thought I had a defect, so I google'd it before posting a new thread and came across this one, ha! Hmmm...maybe it's best to report it to Toyota CS so we can hopefully get a fix if enough people call in for the same problem?? I don't know, but I hate going to the dealer because they usually make things worse... :/

For those who're calling us out and saying we're nit picking and/or being anal about something minute...I can assure you it's not. Yes, you may drown out the sound by upping the volume of whatever you're listening to, but that really isn't a solution for the times you want to cruise silently; times when you want to drown out EXTERNAL noise! So, unless you're paying for my Prius V or jzhou's Prius IV, don't call us out as if we can't rant about ACTUAL problems. Thank you.

Yeah, I noticed with any forum board, the trolls or fanboys tend to come down pretty hard on what they feel is an insignificant issue. (insignificant because it doesn't affect them directly).
Relating to the issue, I for one have never experienced any type of noise that I couldn't account for (coming out of the NAV system). And after driving mine for nearly a year, if the dvd was making a sound, I was never aware of it.

After your and jzhou's posts I had to go out and listen to the Nav system as I couldn't recall hearing it. I have to put my ear against the Nav to hear the DVD mechanism. I panned the map around and also changed search regions to make the DVD seek and I can hear it but again only by putting my ear against the console and that is with the car parked and the car in accessory mode. I would say that if you can hear it at all over the rode noise then your DVD mechanism is much louder than mine. If it bugs you, and i can see how it would, go get it fixed. I like the suggestion of comparing your Nav to another Prius at the dealer and if yours is really much louder than i suspect the mechanism has a problem and you have something to point to when you complain.

However, if your and the "new" prius sound the same, and it still bugs you, pull your Nav, sell it to another GenIII owner on ebay, and buy a nice Kenwood/Garmin in-dash system with the money.

I already called Toyota Customer Relations Dept. and reported my problems, which includes the audible DVD disc in the navi. Now, I just need to wait for my dealership's designated customer relations personnel to contact me for an appointment. If there is a possible fix, I will post an update after the issue has been resolved. I'll definitely compare it to other navi equipped priuses on the lot.

I someone is sensitive to ambient noise and wants to shut off the nav system when it is not in use, I respectfully request of my fellow chatters, to address these issues. Someday you may like an answer to a question.

In my Gen 2 Prius I have in setup options the option of not having the screen automatically default to the nav screen each time I start the car. When I want nav I have to open the application and wait for it to boot up, works for me...
