Well, I wanted to post a better update by now but... I like my Toyota dealer and trust the car to them completely but they somehow managed to order the wrong window. However, the correct window was reordered last week and the dealer informed me that it was on its way. Stay tuned... I still think it will all turn out okay rsn.

BTW, if I didn't mention it, the glass shop uses a UV light to easily detect scratches if you don't have direct sunlight--which was the only way I could see my scratch damaged window. Apparently UV lights up scratches like a Christmas tree... Yes, next time I buy any car I think I'll use one to go over the windows right then and there. The dealers should do so too when they receive the cars. On the other hand... I'd like to think that shipping damage of this sort is pretty rare.

This is interesting. I had the exact same problem in the exact same spot.

I assume careless workers removed the window stickers with a razor and scratched the glass.

I didn't notice it on the lot, but got home and direct sunlight happened to highlight the marks. Incredibly distressing to find on a new car.

The good news: the dealer replaced it 4 days later. Took them less than 90 minutes.

You had better luck getting the job done. The glass shop thinks the dealer may be getting the window direct from Toyota for next to nothing. And then they mistakenly ordered the wrong one which lost time. Your dealer didn't mess around with finding and getting the right replacement.

Well, by tomorrow afternoon I should be all fixed up.

The trials and tribulations of getting a window replaced... Part III... Window works great--all back together--I go driving off home. At home I notice that the rear door lock mechanism is jammed because the mechanism was not set porperly back into the panel. Drive back to the glass shop and it starts to hail lightly while pulling the panel off outside the shop. Fixes the problem and all is okay so I drive home again and got to thinking about the worn door panel clips. Sure enough I find one in the lower corner not holding well at all--no rattles but... So tomorrow after noon it goes back for a third time to get a bunch of clips replaced.

It is real not so funny about the dealer and the glass shop talking up about needing to replace broken or weakened clips to see the glass shop fall down on it. Every time the panel comes off a clip could break or weaken enough so it doesn't hold well--but does the 'technician' take the time to even replace suspect clips? It is just as important to do a job right when you are in a rush as when you have all afternoon.

BTW, the price for 8 clips on a door panel is not $70 (I have absolutely no idea where I came up with that price now) but around $10.50.

$70 was a minimum order amount for the auto glass shop.

What a somewhat disappointing ending. The glass shop guy said he would replace all the bottom clips yet when I went in this afternoon to get that done he first tested the panel and didn't feel anything wrong. This is the same guy who had to use some prying tools carefully to get the panel off the first time and I could here some pretty loud snaps/pops as he did that.

So today I reached down and easily demonstrated how the lower forward corner was hardly holding when I pulled on it. To demonstrate further I pulled a couple other clips loose--which wasn't any worse then what he had done a couple days before when fixing the latch/lock handle installation on the panel. He never replaced any of the clips then. Anyway, he goes balistic on me for an instant and says I just broke all those lower clips. But then he immediately backed down from that and asked me to get away from the door and replaced only the lower forward clip but not any of the others.

He said something like "okay" and I said something like "thanks" and drove off. I won't be going back to him again. Since the lower forward clip is replaced and holding very well with a moderate pull test with my hand and that is similar to the same location on the right door I'm not to worried about the other clips. I explained all this to my Toyota dealer and they said they would all the clips if I wanted but I don't. If the panel ever has to come off again the clips will get replaced again so why bother now for no apparent reason.

But I am kicking myself for not just letting the dealer do the whole job from the beginning. I only lead myself to thinking the specialty auto glass shop knew more about window and door panels then the Toyota dealer and I was saving myself a 15 mile trip into another town--which right now I feel foolish about.

Lesson--If you trust your Toyota dealer for god sake let them work your car. They likely do know more about your model car with factory trained specialists then an independent shop with 25 years experience on everything but Priuses.

I have small scratches all over the outside of the left rear passenger window as well.

I've had my Prius for a little over one month and I am pretty sure that I did not cause them. I've washed the car 5-6 times and use microfiber cloths exclusively. None of the other windows have these scratches. The scratches are almost impossible to see in normal lighting. I need to look at the window at various angles and a flashlight helps. I was walking to my car at night and the light from a parking lot lamp reflected off the scratches which caught my eye. Only one of the scratches is deep enough to really feel with a fingernail.

It is odd that it is only on this window.... thought it might be related to the sticker but the scratches are on the outside of the window and isn't the sticker applied on the inside? I am thinking that there was also a sticker on the outside of the window...perhaps a bar code sticker used for tracking the car during transport and that it was removed with something abrasive at the port or dealership. I'll post a picture of the scratches.

i think the glass just scratches easily. I'm not sure if the type of glass on the Prius is used is any different than typical glass for other cars. The surface on the Prius glass seems more delicate vs. my Camry/Corolla in the past. I also have small scuff scratches on the rear glass quarter panel of my car. I assume it was probably from the car wash, but not sure.

Could be although I can't explain why just one window has these scratches. I looked for them again this morning and they are all but impossible to see in normal lighting conditions so I am no longer surprised that I did not see them earlier. It definitely looks like someone caused them bec. they are semi -circular in pattern and looks like someone used an abrasive material (steel wool) to clean the glass.

My tint guy just recently pointed out that I had a few light scratches on the same window on my brand new 2012 PiP. The scratches are pretty light, but clearly noticeable (and even more so with dark tinted windows), and I can also feel them by running your fingernail over the glass. He also mentioned that multiple PiPs he's tinted within the last several weeks have also had scratches on the same exact window. For some strange reason, it's always that particular window and none of the rest. Nevertheless, he said that several of his customers were able to get their dealerships to replace the scratched windows and fortunately my tint guy (Leo @ TW Tint) said he'd re-tint the window for free. That said, I emailed Dianne @ Carson Toyota and she forwarded my email onto their Client Relations Manager to get the issue resolved. I'll keep you guys updated.

OK, so I guess Carson Toyota has ordered a replacement window for me. Apparently it's gonna take a couple of weeks to come in, so we'll see. More updates coming as this progresses...

My 2012 has the same issue! I did not see it until a particularly sunny day lit up the glass. I assumed they removed the sticker in some brutal way, but maybe something else. A bit leery having dealer open the door- that may cause more harm than just scratches though! Car has 1k miles and has only gone through touchless wash. It is on the same driver side rear window as everybody is mentioning

I have the same scratches. Rear drivers side.
Lower left hand side (when looking at window)

I noticed about a week after delivery. (about 2 weeks ago)

I take it as nothing is damaged or doesnt hinder anything,
but with my 30 day service, I will be letting them know.

I thought that it may be from manufacturing process or even robots handling the windows, not sure.
The carrier straps sound like it could be possible

I certainly hope all you folks that are also discovering window scratches are reporting this phenomena to your dealerships so that they can address it. Carson Toyota, where I bought my PiP, is replacing the window for free. I haven't actually received the new window yet, it's still on order, but it should be in within a week or so.

Just checked the lower left corner of the left rear window glass on my Prius. It has small vertical and horizontal scratches as well. Dealerships are obviously using a razor blade to remove a factory inventory related sticker. I attempted to use car polish to remove the scratches. They are still there. However, I don't plan to tint the windows and will live with the scratches. Fortunately, only a few are deep enough to project a cracked glass look when projected a flashlight on the glass at night. My experience is "fix a thing...break a thing" whenever dealerships attempt to repair this type of damage. I will leave well enough alone...but thought I would pass along that this problem should be addressed by dealerships. Glue Gone should be used...of course that approach takes a few minutes to remove stickers.

I found the same scratches on the same window. It's obviously from someone using a razor blade or other sharp tool to remove the window stickers. It took a while for me to notice because we don't get many sunny days in Portland at this time of year. :D I took it by the dealer today, and they are ordering a new window for me.

This is what happened to my window???!!! Those scratches have been driving me crazy all this time! I could not figure out for the life of me what had happened to that window. I guess I am in a peculiar situation since my PHV was purchased in California and the car is in Texas. I wonder if my local dealer will fix/replace the window.

Update: So a district manager for Toyota wanted to see my scratched window so my local dealership, Carson Toyota, had me bring in my PiP today. Nothing else was really said as far as what they think was the cause for the scratches, but they are planning on replacing the window. The replacement window is currently on back order and should get in around June 8th.

The Service Manager I worked with said, "Hmmmm... somebody took the stickers off with a razor blade and scratched through the UV coating."

When I arrived home after I had bought my new 2012 Prius, I noticed numerous fine scratches on the left rear door window. When the light hit the window at a certain angle, you could really see the many scratches. I did not notice the scratches at the dealership when I had walked around the car. After I had bought it, the dealer detailed the car. I called the salesman the next day and told him about the scratches. He told me to see if they could be cleaned off with Windex. I told him I had tried, but they were scratches and not marks. He told me he would look into it and call me back. He called back later that day and told me that window probably had been scratched during detailing when they removed the stickers on that window with a razor blade. Though it took three weeks (during this time a wrong window had been ordered), the dealer replaced the window.
