No experience with NY dealers, just wanted to congratulate you on 61 mpg. Since you're in NYC, can I assume you are doing mostly city driving?

Actually, I do mostly highway. I work at Long Island. About 50miles one way. Last two tanks I got around 57 MPG. I increased my tire pressure to 40/38 for this tank. Bang 61MPG. I think tire pressure is one of the factor, another factor is the warm weather, around 70 to 90's now in NY.

Back to the topic... any NYer's like to help out here?!!

I'd like to help, but I'm searching just like you are. Unlike you, I'd prefer a good service dept. on the NJ side of Manhattan, but with all the horror stories a little extra mileage and a few tolls would be worth it to have a trustworthy, competent service tech.

I can't believe the lack of responses is due to a lack of Prius owners (I see them all over the place). I just hope it not due to a lack of competent techs in this part of the country.

i have only seen one classic and one 2004+ (not counting mine) here in lower westchester. all the dealers around here have been really shady, deposites not returned, seedy sales people etc... i was gonna try a dealer up by where i work (norwalk ct) but that might be a bit far for tristate peeps. ill let ya know either way.

    ScottY,
I bought my Prius a week ago at Millenium Toyota in Hempstead, so I haven't had it serviced there yet. I did take my Camry there for oil changes a couple of times over the past few years. That went fine (what could go wrong with an oil change?), except that I always had to wait a long time to get the ride to work they promised when I droped it off. It's very close to work for me so I'll probably try them out for the Prius. If I'm dissatisfied, Neil Toyota (Lynbrook) and Westbury Toyota aren't too far from me. Where on LI do you work?

    For Long Island:
I have used and have been very happy with the service at Riverhead Toyota on Long Island. I have used them for all of my SSC repairs and also my yearly inspection.

    For Connecticut:
I have used and have been very happy with the service at Toyota in Danbury Connecticut (service is actually in Brookfield). I DO NOT recommend the service at Toyota of Stamford and especially DO NOT recommend Toyota of Westport. I tried Toyota of Greenwich with mixed results. As you can see I have tried many in CT with mixed results. I used to live in Norwalk and can tell you that the drive to Danbury is worth the piece of mind.

Believe it or not I have 31,000 miles on my 04 Prius purchased 11/03. I have had the 5k oil changes and I also changed the PCV valve. That's it!! I called Westbury Toyota and told them I want the software updates. They looked up my VIN (I was there for one oil change so I was in their computer). They knew what I needed from that information. I am bringing it in next Friday. I'll let you know how I make out.

I thought this thread was dead, then I look again, I see come responses, finally!

coolbreezeny, I work at Greenlawn, NY. Which part of LI you at?

Vince, like you said, I am kinda surprised at the lack of response too. NYers are too busy to look at PriusChat or something?

Here's the story. My gf who lives in NJ recommended her dealer, so I decided to give it a try. So I ask if I should make an appointment. She's like, of because not, I never make an appointment before. So I thought NJ has lower population density than NY, that's why I don't have to do that. That morning, we went to my gf's local dealer. The service department was like, you made an appointment? Saturdays are for appointments ONLY. I looked at my gf and asked, I thought you don't need an appointment? She answered, I never come here on a Saturday before! :cussing:
Then I called my dealer, they are booked as well. So I was like f*** it, I’ll do it myself. Turns out it was not bad at all. I put in 3 quarts of Mobil 1 syn. That's right in the middle between the marks. After the oil change, I rotated my tires as well, since I already got the jack out. So from now on, I will change the oil myself instead of bringing my Prii to the dealers, except for those big maintenance events. If you guys have the time, I strongly recommend you to do it yourselves. You can be sure that you did the right things (no overfill), and you know about your Prii more! I am so proud of myself now.

    Scott,
I live and work in Nassau County. Work is only about a 9 mile drive for me, so haven't "aired out" my Prius yet.

I live in Suffolk county, NY. I bought my Prius at Smithtown Toyota and the purchase experience was great. I was out of town when I did my first 5k service but I did get a coupon from them that said oil changes did not need an appointment and would be done in 29 minutes. I think this did exclude saturdays. I'll see how they are in about 1500 miles when I need to do my 10k service. When I was in Mishiwaka IN, I did my service at Jordan Toyota and was in and out in 45 minutes with no appointment.

Does anyone do the Toyota suggested maintenance or just the what the manual says to do? Seems like alot of money for them to inspect some extra parts.

Westbury Toyota did all the TSBs for me with no issues. I left the car there and picked it up at 6:00PM. They're pretty big!
