do not know if this was already posted, but I find it extremely convenient:

I have a Gen III Pkg 2 (non-jbl, no nav), and I was looking for a cable that would charge both iPod and iPhone, and let me play either unit's music through the Prius's aux port. I also wanted something that was neat and tidy. This cable plus a USB/lighter port is nearly perfect and fits cleanly. In my case, I got a dual port USB charger, so I can listen to and charge my phone or ipod and still charge another, withing the confines of my armrest area. My goal was ZERO clutter. The cable was intended for a Kenwood HU, but works perfectly on its own in a 2010 Prius. Best part? its CHEAP. i got both the cable and the USB charger for about $14.

PROS: cheap, convenient, clean, versetile (you can plug anything into the 2nd USB port on a dual charger. ZERO hiss, hum, or electrical noise while charging/listening to music.

CONS: control is only from the iPhone/iPod itself (not a big deal for me personally), and unlike some other ipod chargers, it will not automatically pause your ipod when you turn off the car. This is what I believe to be the biggest drawback to this solution. Most other chargers allow you to turn off the car, and leave without worrying about the ipod. In this case, you gotta make sure to pause or disconnect the ipod (forcing it to pause). Otherwise, the ipod will drain and die. Fortunately, its not drawing anything from the car, so no worrying about a dead battery.

The cable is a little long, which is both good and bad, but I keep the excess twist-tied in the compartment. The 1/8th inch plugs into the aux, and the USB plugs into the USB charging lighter/adapter of your choice....here's what I went with:

I found a similar product but it's made by Gigaware from Radio Shack. It charges the iPhone/iPod and has a fixed volume output that is perfect and best of all....... it pauses the music when you turn off the car. I can't post a link to it now since I don't have enough posts, but go to Radio Shack and go to:

    Portable Music>Accessories>iPod Accessories>
Gigaware® Audio Cable with Charger for iPod® and iPhone™

Can you close the console lid completely with the wire going to the charger?

When I leave the car I hide my Touch in my upper cup holder.

I haven't tried yet, but I also keep my iPhone connected in the upper cup holder. I just don't close the lid shut all the way, but it is down. I would imagine that the same would apply to any product that has a cable.

you can get a USB car charger direct from China for about $3 - shipped. That will save you about $25

I bought a Belkin car adapter which has a new high power output. The iPhone 3G requires 1A of power in order to charge while using. Most auto power adapters only supply 0.5 A

Haha, so after my initial thrill over my solution, I stumbled onto some extra cash and after checking out the gigaware solution, went with it. Definitely pricier than my original setup, but it seems pretty darn durable

I appreciate that the gigaware cable combines the whole cable system into one cable, has no interference noise from charging, and plays music through the 30 pin slot.
I have an ipod with a broken headphone jack that has come back to life because of this :D
