The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs : An open letter to the people of the world money quote: The truth is, this is all about spiritual emptiness. That is why you’re standing in line. Except for Scoble, who is an attention whore and just doing it to get attention. The truth is, all over the world, across every culture, there exists a sense of yearning. A kind of malaise. An emptiness. At the risk of sounding like Dr. Seuss: There is a hole in your soul. That is what we’re addressing at Apple. That is the hole we aim to fill.
As I read this on my ipad, I think to myself, "I too feel a hole. what is this empty feeling?". Only now do I realize it's simply a lack of lunch and a yearning for the Monte Cristo awaiting me.

I feel much of the animosity towards apple and their products is misplaced. If you do not wish to participate, you don't have to, never will any apple user mock you for doing so. I unfortunately can't say the same when the tables are turned however. If the ipad satisfies your casual computing needs, then it is the product for you. if it does not, it is not. the thing to remember here is that if a product is or becomes popular without your approval or participation, its very easy to catagorize those consumers as mere sheep....Priuschat is a perfect example of prius owners, who are viewed exactly this way by non-prius fans. But the truth of the matter is that prius owners love their prius' for more reasons than sheer practicality (because, lets face it, the price of a prius over its lifetime does not deem it more affordable than other car options). If we bring it back to computing, we see that, like the prius' niche (but growing) market in the auto marketplace, so too are most things, Apple.
people hate anything that is popular if they are not on board. same with sports and every area of life. except for the prius. everyone loves the fact that it's the most popular car on earth.:cheer2:
Lest anyone think I was apple bashing by posting this thread, I thought I'd note that I do indeed have an ipad (3g) on order. I just thought this fake steve post was funny. In an age where there is a never ending stream of gadgets and tech and related service subscriptions competing for my attention and $, I really have to be careful to stop and question when that great gaping maw of unquenchable desire is urging me on to yet another purchase. In my case, I was in the market for a smaller notebook anyway, since my home and travel use of a computer mostly consists of surfing while watching TV. This looks like the perfect couch potato's computer! As an added bonus, it also looks to be a pretty good e-reader. Good point about the similarity between the prius haters and the apple haters by the way. I guess people like to rationalize both their purchases and their non-purchases.
