But to use a nationalistic approach, I'd still buy toyota because they sell more made in canada cars in canada than anyone else.

If the cbc story is the one I read, it's a sour grapes former lawyer for toyota canada.... and no one is debating that toyota got reports of complaints about the pedal, just that they didn't believe it was a design flaw. Read the other nyt article from earlier this week that talks about numbers from all car makers.... toyota hasn't that many more complaints than the others.

As you well know, this old news. The "surging" problem has been discussed by Toyota. The cars were more "rocking" than "surging." They fixed the problem. There was and is no evidence this is related to Luddite Nader's allegation regarding those evil electronic throttle-related SUA incidents (he wants them all banned by NHTSA).

The documents show that there were some issues with a Lexus model, it was investigated and a software fix made available - its in black and white on the documents. The other allegations and counter allegations will be down to the Courts to decide.

This however does not seem to be an issue related to brake pedals or carpet mats. It is an issue related to software and it seems that the software has to adapt to individual driver behaviour. This seems fair to me.

It is possibly a downside of using software to control a car, as no computer program can be written to account for every possible situation and driver behaviour. Look at the problems with Ford Cruise Control deactivation switches - something like 9.6 million vehicles?

Until we get to a situation whereby cars drive themselves and drivers are mere observers of the process there will be more of these software related recalls.

malorn malorn malorn ... once again you have lead your self down the garden path ... holding the hand of us PC'ers, my whacky GM dealin' friend. Since you asked about the "other 98%" ... HERE is "what about the other 98% ..." ... not that it pleases me to remind you, but even in the midst of Toyota's temporary issues with quality:

GM is making the worst cars on the road ~
worst-made-cars-on-the-road: Personal Finance News from Yahoo! Finance

Or would you rather read of GM's failures in the View of MSN:
The Worst Cars Ever - MSN Autos

And as for Trucks & SUV's ?? You already know that they are (besides fuel wasting) UNSAFE, compared to the fuel sippers that we drive:
Bigger isn't better: dispelling the myth of the safe SUV - Lay Of The Land | Sierra | Find Articles at BNET

(Thank you Steve0 for the web searches)

So, like we've told you umpteen times before ... come back when GM gets their act together with a quality high tech / high mileage clean car (that doesn't have a crusher built on the exit end of the factory). Good luck with that.

And below? Below is what makes malorn cry the hardest:

I do feel your exasperation. GM sales are only slogging along ... though the HOPE was that if/when Toyota's quality finally hiccuped ... GM would be able to ride to glory ... millions of truck & SUV sales. But instead, Poof! The fantasy faded almost as quickly as Toyota apologized, fixed things, and moved on. Yet malorn is still trying to excuse GM's multi decade tragedy with, "... see? Toyota has problems too! ..." Yet he still don't see the difference.
