I don't know if any of you is aware. Dealers are very dodgy. Especially the Mechanics.

Firstly there are no such letter. No way will Toyota will revert the prefered oil for the Prius from 0W-20 to 5W-30. Because you've caught them so they lied, since they all thing it is such a easiest thing to lie to customers to.

0W-20 is not even avaliable here in Toyota dealers here in the UK so they will put in 0W-30, but I buy 0W20s myself but now I am thinking of reverting back to 0W-30s to have more engin protection and lose a bit of MPG.

You should report this dealer to Toyota HQ USA regaring this issue.

I remember Toyota UK dealers were using semi syn oils all the time even for the lexus range. I found it very surprising at the time because I've always used fully syn and thought they would atleast use fully syn for the Lexus.

Only after a while a lot of customers complained then they started to use the fully syn 0W-30.

But I won't be using 5W-30s anytime soon.

Lets put hit this way they all only care about money and they are starting to forget how they got to their position in the first place.

I have owned 3 of theses cars and this 2010 prius is the first one I insisted on the -0W-20 oil. This has been the first time Ive been able to maintain 50 and above for mpg .So I belive there is a difference .
    My dealer agrees also

I don't know how they can give you 0W-20 oil when they don't have any. The only 0W-20 oil that you can find in the UK are armsoil which Toyota will definilty not stock.

They tell you they've put it in but you will never know what they put in anyway.

It would be extremely helpful if one of the UK 2010 Prius owners would scan and post the section in their owner manual that states what sort of oil viscosity to use

Generally, a 5W-20 and especially a 0W-20 is almost unheard of - and just as easy to find as hens teeth - outside of the USA and Canada. Even Ford's that specify 5W-20 over here, will generally run 5W-30 in the EU market

Most of the 0W-30 oils sold in the EU are heavy duty oils, intended for use up to 2 years or 30,000 miles if so approved by the car maker. I wouldn't worry about running a good 0W-30 in a Prius

Regardless of whether 5W30 is adequate, please advise whether Mobil 1 full synthetic 0W30 is adequate. Have completed 1st oil change at about 5,000 miles, with Mobil 1 full synthetic 0W20, which is hard to find in this area of South. A web site explaining differences between 0W20 and 0W30, if any differences, will be appreciated. So far, 2010 w/Sunroof is an Outstanding car. I understand Toyota owns greater than 100 patents relating to hybrid technology. The Prius is an amazing vehicle at 50-55 mpg.

The difference at operating temp is that the 0W-20 will be marginally thinner viscosity

For example, Mobil 1 0W-20 is rated at 8.6 cSt at +100 C. At the other end of the scale, the MRV at -40 is 5,642 cP

Mobil 1 0W-30 is rated 11 cSt at +100 C. At the other end of the scale, the MRV is quoted at 11,100 cP at -40

So, at operating temp, the 0W-30 is thicker than the 0W-20. Is this difference enough to be noticeable? Probably not. In a new "tight" motor design, the 0W-20 should work well.

I used Mobil 1 0W-20 for most of the time I owned my '04 Prius, with no oil consumption. In summer, no difference in fuel economy. Excellent lab analysis results too

In Arctic temps, the lighter oil will provide very tangible cold start benefits, reduced wear, and increased fuel economy.

YMMV. My '07 FJ Cruiser motor had a TSB that approved it for 5W-20/0W-20, despite the oil filler cap requiring 5W-30, and the same motor in Australia and the EU running an xW-40 oil.

I tried 0W-20 in my FJ, and generally had poor results. No difference in fuel economy, the nitration spiked, and the oil actually thickened to a 30 range anyway.

Here in San Diego, I don't expect any arctic temperatures. In fact, it gets quite hot inland. So I'm leaning for the 5W30. I know in older engines like my Dodge 440 RV, you want 40 or 50 weight oil in hot weather. But the Prius engine starts and stops all the time, where a low viscosity is better.

I actually received an email followed up with a phone call from my dealer's Service Advisor. He said that after our discussions on my last visit, he had gone back and re-read the Toyota letter to owner's concerning the increase in the OCI to 10K with the 0W20 synthetic oil and said that he wanted to apologize for misinterpreting the letter !! He has assured me that 0W20 oil has been entered in the computer database for my Prius and this problem will never happen again.

As for the tire pressure, he talked with the technician and they checked his pressure gauge and verified that it was working properly. He has no excuse for the tire pressure being that high but the technician promised that would not happen again. He has also entered my request for 42/40 tire pressure in to the computer database for future service appointments.

I did not keep a copy of the Toyota letter confirming the 10K OCI for the 0W20 synthetic oil to go back and re-read the entire letter. Does anyone have a copy they can post?

I am not sure what prompted the email and the phone call but for what it is worth, I appreciate the follow up responses. I believe I will give this service advisor another chance and see whether he can get it right next time.

Yes, I wonder how many other owners this Service Advisor has done this to before someone caught it and corrected it !!

0W-30 would be just fine. Actually better for the engine, just slighty poorer MPG but I think I rather go 0w-30 than 20. Oh well I just have to wait for 2 more oil changes then I will switch back to 0w-30.

With my '04, there was no difference whatsoever in summer driving, running either Mobil 1 0W-20 or Mobil 1 0W-30. I only noticed a slight benefit with 0W-20 once the temps were -30 C and colder

Mobil One 0 X 30 is available at Walmart for about 22.00
    for a 5 quart jug.

Mobil One 0 x 20 is not available at Walmart in the 5 quart
jug, only in the quart bottle for about 6.27 per quart.

Quite a savings. Next time I will use
0 X 30 Mobil One, I am sure the engine
will not explode. Also I believe in
100 degree plus temps in the desert
    0 X 30 would be a better choice than
    0 X 20.

    Just my opinion
