First off I just wanted to say cool site, I definitely can learn a lot about the cars. That being said, let me introduce the Prius. We bought it from Longo Toyota in El Monte, CA after getting the run around from Bill Wright Toyota in Bakersfield and Frontier Toyota in Valencia, both wanted to charge a $3k premium. We made a call to Longo and they said they'd sell at sticker, so we took a trip down. The Prius is my moms car, but I find myself driving it around a lot too. We took a roadtrip to Phoenix in it this past weekend and I must say it was a pretty funy trip, got mid 40s for gas mileage (I'm no slow driver) and the navigation system saved us more than once. Here are a few pics, sorry for the big picture size, but having my own domain makes me inconsiderate to others connections. Which reminds me, if you need anything hosted, as long as its of reasonable size, let me know.

A few may wonder why my name is 00Silverado, that is because it is what I drive. Here is a picture of my gas hog.

Anyways.... I'm glad I found this site, hopefully I'll be able to contribute something.

Nice, nice! I think the pics are a bit big, though. More pics of the 911, please!

Sorry about that, I'll remember to resize them for future reference. The 911 is my Dads, it needs some work as it has been his daily driver since 1990. He wants a Prius as a new car. Here are a few pics I have of it, it is quite dirty in this picture. Hopefully this size should be better for you!

Yeah they are cool, I am trying to get him to fix it up, it mainly needs cosmetic work, the summers here are hard on red paint.... that and my butt when I hop in my truck after it has been sitting outside... I have black leather seats.

I got rid of a '00 Sierra. The picture is in my personal album.

In your Silverado, any problems with the AutoTrac mode select module or the Vortec knock-knock?

Not sure how to access the personal album...
As for the auto trac, which I do have, I haven't experienced any problems. I have read about people having problems with the switch, but as far as I have seen it's not an extremely widespread problem. A replacement switch from the dealer would have cured your issue. The Vortec cold startup knock can be heard on my truck, it hasnt gotten to the point of sounding like a diesel though, it still has relatively low miles considering its age (58K on it) Supposedly they fixed the problem in 03. Supposedly if you complained to your dealer enough they would extend the warranty to 100k. Currently the problems worrying me about my truck are the 4l60e and my G80 in the rear end. Well I'm babbling now...
6 replies and 173 views though, I'm popular, haha.

    Hello David:

    <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(00Silverado\";p=\"113951)</div>
When you read my post, you will see some icons at the bottom such as "Profile." There will be an icon that looks like a camera: click that and it should open my Personal Album here at PriusChat.

The switch module issue appears to be widespread, at least for the early NBS Sierra/Silvo. Replaced twice under warranty and once off warranty. They appear to have made a correct replacement switch late '03.

Mine started the Piston Slap noise at 5,000km/3,000mi. That is about the right time for a problem motor to make that noise, see:

Or they will do what my selling dealer did and give me a comment that rhymes with "Duck Shoe." So I replied "Duck Shoe to you too pal!" and peeled out of there.

My 4L60E worked fine, never had an issue. I took off the pan at 1,000km and changed the filter sock, then refilled with Mobil 1 ATF. I did it again after towing the first time, then every two years. That makes all the difference.

I special ordered my truck with 4.10 gears as I knew I would be towing 7,800 lbs or so. Also ordered the G80 locker.

I did the initial G80 service at the same time as the 4L60E. When I had the cover off the diff the first time, the magnet was hairy with shavings and fuzz. Cleaned everything off and refilled with that "special" $28/qt GoodWrench fluid.

After towing the first time, I changed the rear fluid again - as it recommends in the shop manual but not the owner manual. No bigger shavings but some fuzz. When I changed it again around 6 months later, the magnet was squeaky clean. That time I refilled with Mobil 1 Gear Oil which I used all the time I had the truck, in the front axle too.

GM had a few failures of the front axle up here, due to the -40 temps and GM insisting on using a 80W-90 in the front axle. With Mobil 1 Gear Oil or Mobillube SHC 75W-90, never an issue.

Remember the G80 isn't a "true" locker with gears. It still has clutch plates, which are carbon fiber, which are engaged by a governor assembly. Hence the old name: "GovLok."

If you use the wrong gear oil, the clutch plates will chatter, slip, or stick. Even GM has a lot of contradictory information about the G80. The G80 is made by Eaton Corp and they recommend a conventional 80W-90 gear oil with additional additive in their Limited Slip, which uses the same carbon fiber clutch pack.

For obvious reasons, you may be reluctant to use the expensive GoodWrench "grape juice." The Mobil 1 Gear Oil works fine and is a fraction of the cost. Otherwise you will need the proper supplementary additive, I like the CRC Trans-X PosiTrac.

    Hope that helps.

    Jay

Ah, figured it out now. This is a bit different from the truck boards I surf. Your Sierra looked like a nice ride, pretty much stock like mine, but hey, stock is good :D

All I did to it was put on Rancho 9000 shocks, so I could adjust the damping empty and when towing. Made a huge difference in the ride empty, I left them set on Soft. Our roads up here are terrible due to the frost heaves.

I quickly got rid of the stock Firestone Wilderness tires. Mine caused pulling problems. Put on LT rated Michelin LTX AT.

I was lucky enough to at least not have that problem. I know many NBS owners who did though. Especially if they drove on bumpy gravel roads.

That is a known issue and a TSB was out years ago. The PCM has to be reprogrammed.

Did your Vortec 5.3 have the lopey idle? Mine did and apparently the same flash code that fixes the lopey idle also fixes the transmission.

Why do you want another friction-type unit? I'd look at a PowerTrax LockRite like I put on my old Ford F-150. It works very well and you don't have to monkey with special lubes

    http://www.powertrax.com

For heavy work especially towing, the 4.10's are the only way to go. I was very happy I ordered them.

In city driving (Stop and Inch) at -40, around 4-7 MPG. Summer around 10 MPG. Highway around 16-18 driven at the speed limit. Towing it got 6 MPG.
