My 2010 Prius was "dogged" today by a 2008 dodge truck with a cummins turbo diesel. He thought he was going to pull out in front of me and not let me pass him. I had the cruise control set at 68 mph and had to slow down to 35 when he pulled out in front of me. He then laid into it for all it was worth and blew black smoke everywhere so I then decided...what the hell, Ill play too! I romped the prius and we reached a speed of 89 mph and the dodge COULD NOT PASS ME! THE DODGE COULD NOT PASS ME! THE DODGE COULD NOT PASS ME! His black smoke was everywhere. Im sure he must have used 15 or 20 dollars worth of gas trying to look good in front of a prius. He was quite embarrassed in front of his girlfriend when his turbo diesel dodge could'nt keep up with a PRIUS!!!! Dont ever let anyone tell you that a 2010 Prius is "slow". BTW, I was in ECO mode!

I would hope the dodge could go faster than 89... Is 89 measured from the Prius speedo, because I have used satellite checked speeds and 89 displayed is usually around 87 or 86 actual. But the prius is a fast car. Shame on you for driving as you did, but you were really only half the problem there.

But in all reality most people including myself go over the limit, and triple digits is not too hard to achieve even in a Prius. The only time I have an issue with the Prius power is when I am climbing a long mountain road, and trying to sustain speeds of 85mph+. Once the battery is gone, it takes pedal to the metal to maintain speed. Not too shabby for a lawn mower.

You initiated the race, but the Dodge driver ended the race early and won't be crazy as you.

How many Doge Ram diesel trucks can a Prius tow? Neither vehicle is suited for drag racing. Foolish and pointless waste of resources.

When you find yourself arguing with an idiot, the thing to do is back away and let him think he won. I am glad to see the Dodge owner understands this.

I don't know if the Prius had anything to do with it. I see plenty of trucks pull into traffic without sufficient clearance. These drivers believe they are large enough to force everyone else to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting them, and they are right.

I'm tempted to say passing the truck only reinforces that bad behavior, but those kinds of drivers are really a lost cause so screw him and I chuckle at the thought of how upset he probably was. Playing that game incurs risk that I personally would not take, but hey, not everyone is as boring as me.

Hey professor, read it again, I had the cruise set at 68, HE initiated the race and gave up after 89mph.

I wonder if this guy is posting on the Dodge Turbo Diesel boards about how he taught that Prius driver a lesson by blowing his sooty exhaust all over his precious, tree hugger mobile....

Prius is surprising fast accelerating at highway speed. It is due to instant electric motor response and eCVT superiority (not having to down shift).

When idiot trucks do this to me I just pull into a lane beside them and force them to be stuck there and laugh at them as I get 47 MPG and they get 10. These drivers are jerks.

ECO mode doesn't change the power output of your Prius. You would have had the same power in Normal or Power modes.

Exactly. Most of those sorts are a "lost cause" as you say, so teaching them a lesson won't help any. I just don't bother anymore, let them think they're great.

As an owner of both a 2010 Prius IV and a 2004 Dodge 3500 Cummins Turbo-Diesel truck, allow me to chime in here. My Cummins gets its maximum torque (enough to pull a house off of its foundation) at around 1800rpm (the 08 is even lower getting its max tq at 1500rpm). So, it's not really a top speed type of engine. And, he might have been running with 4.10 gearing - designed for better pulling at the expense of top end speed. All that said, having driven both, the driver of the truck could have easily smoked (in more ways than one) your Prius had he really wanted to. And, he could probably do it while dragging 7000lbs behind him. Unless you're a real masochist, I'd think twice about racing other cars with a Prius.
