I just recently bought an 07 Prius Pkg. 2. The audio, as many of you know, leaves something to be desired. So I've been trying to learn as much as I can about putting in a good sounding system.

Right now I have an Alpine IVA-205 double din head unit, Eclipse 6.5 2-ways for the rear doors, and MB Quart QSD 216 components for the front doors.

I'd like to add a sub but not take up room in the rear cargo area. What sort of installations have people had luck with, that sounded good? If I get a sub thats already powered, I'd run the rear speakers off the head unit and use the two channel amp I already have for the front speakers. Otherwise I'd buy a 4 channel amp and bridge two of the channels for the subwoofer.

I'd be willing to spend up to $1000 on additional equipment and installation...how difficult is installation on a Prius, anyway? The local shop quoted me about $400 for a full install job not including a subwoofer.

I'd get a five channel amp. That'll be enough to power a sub and your other speakers. The self powered sub saves space but you give up sound quality.

like el diablo said 1 amp would save on space. but what are you trying to achieve? an audiophile sound quality? if you are u should look into audiocontrol units like the lc-6 and running a high quality amps,1 for bass and 1 4 channel for your highs and mids.

No need for the LC6 when you've already replaced the stock head unit. With your $1000 it would be possible to replace your 2 channel amp with either a 5 channel (but good small ones get spendy fast) or a 4 channel. With the 4 channel you could run the front comps and then use the other 2 channels bridged for the sub. Leave the rear door speakers on the HU - they don't need anything more than that.
Many sub options have been tackled in this car and covered in PriusChat, search is your friend. If you keep the cost down on the amp you could probably do a custom fiberglass rear cubby install by a shop and stay under $1000. Just my 2bits!
