I have a US 2010 Prius Gen III IV and it has the USB in Nav Package. It came with a separate leaflet discussing USB Interface and supported devices and eludes to supporting USB device other than Ipod. I have successfully been able to connect an Ipod 80GB Classic to the USB port in the center console and it plays the MP3 files contained within. However I would like to connect a more permanent solution. 500 GB USB hard drive which I can format with FAT32 partition via some open source software (fat32format). I have done this for backing up a Playstation 3 to it and it required a FAT32 partition as well. I can format the whole drive to at least 250 GB with FAT32 and the PS3 recognized and backed up to the drive. FAT32 was required by Sony. All files on the hard drive are MP3 format and are typically sized MP3 music files.

    My questions are:

1 - Will the NAV system recognize the 500 GB FAT32 formatted USB hard drive? Will the NAV system recognize partitions of this size?

2 - Is there enough power from car USB port to power hard drive. This I believe will be the limiting factor. This will probably make all of this impossible. The USB HDD is powered by the USB port in a PC but not sure if the NAV system is outputting enough power to power the Seagate FreeAgent 500 GB USB HDD.

3 - Assuming answer to 1 is YES, What file layout structure is required for the NAV system to intuitively display tracks and allow playback? Directory tree layout, etc.

4 - Will leaving USB Hard Drive plugged in drain accessory battery? I am assuming that when car is off that this would not be the case but just checking.

5 - Will the warranty be voided for any reason for connecting such a device?

You might try the following thread I started last week. It may help.

    http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...ronics/79239-usb-size-limits-flash-drive.html

In a nutshell, I seriously doubt it will work as I have been unable to get my 32GB Sandisk flash drive to work. Tops anyone has gotten is 16gb's. And yes I formatted everything to required spec (FAT32)
Please let me know if you find a way, however. I would love to have greater than 16gb in use! Thanks

I imagine the USB host (Toyota NAV system) is severely limited in software to accomodate large partitions let alone power requirement of USB HDD as opposed to limit power requirement of USB pen drive. But I did find a 3rd party product that claims the above is possible with their hardware and the 2010 Toyota NAV system. It is over $300 however.

Link below (I have not had 5 posts so had to insert link below without URL http prefix)

Anyone shelled out the cash for this and can provide a review. I am thinking of just leaving my IPOD 80GB classic in my car and call it my permanent music storage device. Easy to sync to Itunes. I will keep my USB HHD for backing up my PS3. Instead of shelling out $300+ for the above I would just buy another IPOD 80 GB classic for $249 unless the unit above can scan drive faster to find songs or something what would be the point?
