(sort-of) breaking news story of Navy Captain Jack Kriz, who survived a crash while driving his Prius in San Diego. He was hit by a driver who had a suspended license for DUI. Accident actually occurred 2 years ago, but the trial just ended and suddenly became newsworthy.

Driver Sentenced For Crash That Severely Injured Navy Capt. - San Diego News Story - KGTV San Diego

watch the video, which shows some amazing footage of the wreckage. Hard to believe he survived in that Prius -- maybe a testament to the safety features and design. Unfortunately the victim had to endure 2 years of suffering and rehabilitation, and a life in a wheelchair that will never be the same.

That pickup driver should have gotten 6 YEARS in prison, not 6 months. Why is society so tolerant of drunk drivers? We need to get them off the roads for a LONG time so they won't hurt other people again.

Yeah I can't believe he got such a little prison sentence. It's not like it was a true accident - the guy had been drinking and it wasn't the first time!

I'm guessing his insurance (assuming he had any) won't pay out because he was drunk? What's the guy in the wheelchair supposed to do now?

What a selfish ****** that guy in the truck is. He obviously doesn't give a **** what happens to others. He'd proved that by being caught driving drunk before. Hopefully his six months in prison will be spent sharing a cell with a hard, large lifer who takes a fancy to him.

I'll bet the pick up truck driver gets drunk and drives again. They are drug addicts and mentally weak people. A drunk driver near me was arrested for the 15th time this year and had killed two people back in the seventies.

Go back and listen to the end of the report. The truck driver wasn't drinking at the time. The reporter states that at the end. That's probably why the sentence was so light. Though how he could have done that and NOT been drunk is beyond me.

I don't believe in punishment (or torture) - which mainly serves to gratify the punisher/torturer. However, when an individual repeatedly demonstrates a complete disregard for the laws of society and poses a danger to the lives and health of others, they need to be removed from society - indefinitely or even permanently, if necessary.

When someone with mental illness poses a danger to others, we keep them locked up until the illness is cured (or until we cut the taxes which fund those institutions, whichever comes first) - it should be the same with drinking and driving (the cured part, at least). Instead, we as a society treat it as a "momentary lapse" - even for an individual with a history of "momentary lapses". And instead of addressing the problem by treating the illness (usually alcoholism) and keeping these people off the streets until they are cured, we try to make examples by punishing a few of the most newsworthy offenders - and then releasing them when their time has been served, cured or not. (often sooner, if we don't want to pay the taxes to support those institutions)

OK, so he was driving on a suspended licence instead. Great. Which is worst?

Sounds like a real upstanding pillar of the community!

And you never answered the part where I asked if his insurance is valid to pay for the other guys ruined life? I guess as he was driving on a suspended licence his insurance would be invalid? Again, he deserves everything he gets in prison.
