2004 - 2009 Prius Floor Mat with pedal safety recall campaign letter

Last sentence of 'What is the Condition?'

"... Toyota has determined that this defect does not exist in vehicles in which the driver side floor mat is compatible with the vehicle and properly secured."

The defect being an incompatible or unsecured floor mat intefering with gas pedal which gets stuck wide open.

My floor mat is secured and is compatible with the gas pedal area due to about 2" clearance on all sides with pedal pushed to floor. Therefore, this defect does not exist in my car. Case closed.

I won't bring mine in either.
1 - not the problem, plenty of clearance
2 - dealer is incompetant (although this fix doesn't require a high level of competancy)
3 - I don't like wasting my time for nothing.

So...... now there isn't a recall for some of them? I'm pretty sure my 2007 was covered by the recall, but I though it was odd as there is a plastic hook thing that holds the mat in place and it never seemed to be a risk.

took my 06 in yesterday and they wanted to butcher the gas petal. said there is no way your touching it.. has bout 3" clearance to the back of the gas petal to the floor mat. floor mats are the ones toyota sells that are rubber and are all weather. when i talked to them on the phone a couple days before i was told they had a new thiner rubber floormat to replace the ones i have in there. never did get the new and improved mats. but then its no big deal.
they had me sign a waever in case of an accident.. don't get it, but i signed it and rolled out the door. will check with another dealer to see what they have to say. previously i talked to both of these dealers and each had a differant story on the recall a couple months ago..

interesting in the thread by chrisolyte whose wife says she experienced u/a, first he says no floor mats and gas pedal modified. then he says no carpets but rubber floor mats, which he seems to think solves the problem and pedal is NOT modified. talk about a ball of confusion!

I received the "official" recall notice this last week regarding floormats ONLY ... no mention of the "gas" pedal.

I'll be going in for regular / scheduled service in about four weeks and, as of now, am planning to take the notice with me so they can review it, but I am NOT planning to have them do anything about either the floormat or the pedal.

I've TRIED to get the mat to interfere with the pedal - while parked in the garage here at our humble cave - without success and, to date, have had NO issues with "unintended acceleration".

It seems to me Toyota is spending a majority of their floormat / pedal recall-related expenses on printing, stuffing and sending out notices to tens-if-not-hundreds-of-thousands of owners who have the audacity to use OEM mats and make sure that the mats are properly installed ...

I purchased some new Prius winter mats online about two weeks ago (thru a dealer on eBay). I installed them and the new design is just as they described it. The rubber is thinner (don't know why) and it appears the part of the mat that is near the accelerator pedal is LESS closer now. I actually think they were too aggressive in the new design. Whatever. I needed the new mats as the old ones developed a hole where my heel rests. I suppose with the thinner design the new hole will develop faster. I think when winter approaches I'll invest in the Weathertech mats. I also like the rear mats they sell as it covers the hump as well. As for my pedal, I won't let anyone go near it.

I'm on the fence - I suppose I'd like to see what exactly they plan to do to modify the pedal. We've never had a problem and have had the car for over 6 years (took delivery Oct 2003).

I was told the problem exists with cars that have the all weather floor mat. This mat could get caught on the pedal. The carpeted ones will not. So, if your car has the all weather mats, then Toyota will replace them with carpeted mats during the recall.

I had the recall done on my car because I felt it was good preventive maintenance. After it was completed I could hardly notice a change in my pedal at all. As a matter of fact, I had to study it for awhile to notice anything. Start to finish it took the mechanic an hour.
