I ordered a new Prius IV and have been waiting for delivery. I didn't order the NAV package because it cost $2480 and I thought that I might be happier with a Garmin or other aftermarket GPS for a lot less money. I also didn't order the Solar package, mostly because of the $4300 (solar + nav) price.

Are the packages worth the extra cost? A friend is going to order a new Prius and I'm not in a position to advise him.

Since you did not order the NY (Nav) or the SY (solar roof, nav) there are no other factory packages for the Prius IV. The only other options are all dealer or port installed.

I really think the packages are worth the extra cost. We got the NAV and Solar Roof Package and our Prius is 'heaven' to drive. If you can bite the bullet right now, you will be very happy in the long run. Go spend that money!

I have no opinion on the solar roof. As far as the Toyota nav system is concerned there are quite a few threads about that, here is one of the more recent ones:
    http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...-prius-navigation-system-really-horrible.html

A lot of the dealer and port installed options are available from this site for less. Some of the port options you may get rather you want them or not. My car came with floor mats which I wanted anyway and a worthless cargo net that I didn't order and didn't want. Be sure to avoid extended warranties, service contracts, and all the other junk dealers make a lot of money on. You don't need any of it. Enjoy your new Prius and :welcome:.

It really depends on what you want. If you want a moonroof, then you're gonna have to spring for the Solar Roof package.

Nav is really a personal choice. If you think you're gonna be happier with a PND, then forego the nav system. I already have a PND so I went with the Toyota nav so that I can compare. I also like the bigger screen and the fact that it's built in.

I purchased my package IV with both the NAV and Solar panels. The solar panels themselves are a novelty and more of a conservation piece than an actual benefit. It does power the fan to run on hot days, but it doesn't cool the interior down completely. However.... it does come with the sunroof, which I enjoy and use quite often. So if your friend wants the sunroof, he has to buy the solar panel package... unless he goes aftermarket.
As for the NAV, yeah it doesn't have the most current maps, doesn't have the functionality and option of updating like those of aftermarket units. For me, I know that if purchased a Garmin unit, it'll probably sit in the glovebox the majority of the time. The factory NAV has saved me a couple of times when I've been lost in a unknown area (with the aftermarket unit - since it would've been sitting in the glovebox - I would have had to stop, turn it on or plug it into the outlet, wait until it connects with the satellite). At least the factory NAV keeps the interior clean instead of having an aftermarket until hanging off the windshield.
So I guess the ultimate question is, what features does your friend want on his car? For me, I knew I wanted leather and NAV... the sunroof and solar panels were an added, although expensive, bonus.

I am looking for a 2010 Prius IV without a NAV package. Since I don't need it for where the car will be used, I don't want to shell out the extra $$$. The dealers are telling me that I can't get a IV without NAV yet posts on this forum mention folk who have that car! What am I missing here? It is possible that California is not getting the IV without a NAV package. That is what one dealer told me. Any info would be appreciated. TIA

Yep. It's a regional thing. It could very well be that CA doesn't get IV without navs. You can ask them to do a special order or, if they're unwilling, buy out of region.

When you punch in your zip code on the Toyota site you'll be able to build what is being ordered for your region. If you don't have the option to buy what you want then you'll have to buy out of state. California is two regions: San Francisco & Los Angeles. Go east to the Denver Region or north to the Portland Region.

Just curious how long it takes for a newly ordered Prius to come in?

    Welcome to Pchat.

When I went to the Toyota site and did my research, the package IV and V always came with the Navigation system. It is a regional thing as others have pointed out.

I used my NAV yesterday. I had to take my kids to the orthodontist's office (something on my daughter's braces broke). I had the address, but had never been there before. After driving around for a bit (with my 2 pre teens failing to be able to give me directions, because they never bother to pay attention when they are being chauffered to their destinations) I pulled over, entered in the address and was at my destination in less than 5 minutes.

I don't use the NAV that often, but it has come in handy when I've needed to use it.

*Edit* Oh, and the back up camera is very handy for seeing out the back of the car prior to reversing. In case any small children/animals are behind my car and below the rear window(s).
