Regarding the idea that the smaller vehicles are more likely to get hit. My Prius was rear-ended (when I had owned it for only 6 months!!!) and then a few months later, my husbands motorcycle was rear-ended. And he was sitting in a line to get on base! Makes you wonder.

But these were both hits by males under 25....

    LOL!

So I take my Honda Fit into the bodyshop to have the bumper repaired. Talking to the adjuster and estimator handling my claim. I tell him I think the damage looks to be very minor. Unsolicitated he starts telling me how that very morning they had a Toyota Prius in with similar damage and that once they got the bumper off they found more extensive damage....

LOL! Alright who in Oregon just recently became the latest member of The Club? Plus why does it seem that Prius and hatchbacks are magnets for this type of accident? I'd really like to see some comparitive data...because it really seems to be happening a lot to hatchback drivers.

Quick question - are you saying that you pressed the brakes repeatedly in order to "indicate"/"warn" him that you were a stopped car? I do that all the time in situations like that, and it works most of the time.

Maybe next time we need to hit the horn, especially if its elderly we're talking about here...

I have a small memory-foam pillow I got at the dealer that I keep behind my neck. I got it for cruising support and headache relief, but I guess it would help in a rear end collision.

Thank you for your post and kind words. And your right I saw it all coming at me and I tensed so bad I could have bent the steering wheel. I was suprised it still flung me. It does not help that your headrest is so far away from the actual positioning of your head. Unlike the 2010 which seems much more correct and comfortable.

But you all must be absolutely right in that it was no way 45 mph's. I retract that statement. It just felt that way.
Based on Patricks car he may be right on the money. 20 tops?
I have still been unable to get an appraisal on the car.
Tomorrow I hope. I went underneath the back to tie wrap the broken panel up that was dragging on the ground and I can see the 2 big black steel mounts that hold the bumper frame to the chassis are collapsed.
I'm thinking $4,000 in damage with 2 bumper covers and mechanical stuff.

Oh yes pumping 'em like hell....please please stop....
I'm so paranoid I do it all the time now. But, I wonder if the brake lights on our cars are not loud enough? Its a very small car.
I'd like to design a more brighter rear brake light system using LEDS.
Maybe with some movement in the LEDS. We get rear ended alot.

But, you would not believe the rash of serious rear collisions in this area lately. I am very lucky.
People do not pay attention at all. This one just today:

FHP: Driver rear-ends school bus in Ruskin - Bay News 9

Very bad wreck. How the hell do you not see a stopped school bus? Its freakin' huge!!!! Thats texting I bet. Just not looking at the road.

And this very very tragic accident in Miami the other day:

    RIP Officer.

Like I mentioned earlier, it might have helped to put your head back to the headrest before the collision.

The crumpled steel mounts are called toyota's buyer protection plan. :)

    Hi Ed,

Sounds good. I suggest that you visit the car after the bumpers have been removed (and take more photos) so that you can satisfy yourself regarding the full extent of the accident damage.
