That's actually pretty good. It's better than a lot of cars get even in normal driving.

This got me thinking.... Are you at one bar because the traction battery isn't being charged fast enough? If that's the case, how long can the Prius go at top speed? I assume it is using the ICE and the traction battery to move the car. At some point, wouldn't the ICE have to spend energy recharging the battery to keep the electric motors working? Can it do so and have enought horsepower left over to move the car at max speed? Or will the car have to slow down?

Anyone have access to a track and feel like playing?

Interesting comparison here with the Bugatti Veyron:

Top speed: 253.8 mph and a 26.4 gallon tank empties in 12 minutes whilst covering just over 50 miles.

A set of Michelins costs $25,000 but to replace the tires, the rims have to go to France.

I have found that when you have the pedal to the floor, it will use the traction battery up to about 104mph, then it turns it's attention to the battery. (In my case.) It always felt to me that the car takes longer with a low battery to get up to top speed. I think the computer limits the Gen II at 108mph. With a low battery, in my Gen II, it will only do about 106 or 107mph.

Today, I have some pretty interesting findings.
I will have a video up for you guys but this is what its about. Today, Brad and I went to the farm to have fun in our first generation Prius, and the third generation Prius. I drove the first generation in reverse for miles, and had a completely depleted battery. The car's top speed in reverse is 22mph, and I went like that forever. Then when the battery couldn't supply anymore voltage. Even the turtle light came on, and the speed in reverse went from 22mph, to about 9mph. It would accelerate at 7mph, then stop at 9mph, then go back down to about 7mph again and so on. When I knew the battery was completely empty, I put it in drive and floored it and it took 21 seconds to get to 65mph. The top speed was 71mph and it wouldn't go any faster. The MFD was displaying that the battery was being charged, while also supplying electricity to the electric motor, and using the gas engine to propel the car. Then I got a small burst of power (I'm guessing the battery started to supply the electric motor again.) And the car was catching speed a bit better now, this time, when the car passed 89mph, the engine started to charge the battery again. Then the car was only topping out at a speed of 91mph. (We have all this on video that we will upload.) In Brad's 3rd generation Prius, we drove in reverse, and the battery would only go to 2 bars, after that, it stayed steady. There was no noticeable power loss besides at higher speeds.

    1. I'm jeleous ... I want to try it.
    2. I don't doubt you can reach that speed. Hell, a few years ago Al Gore's son got busted for doing 105mph right near my home on the 405 fwy - And that was a G2!

Try a German car at those speeds. They are only getting warmed up! My ole trusty 854 T5 just starts to purr at high speeds. Similarly for BMWs and Mercedes. But, they were built for autobahns.

    Prius driving is another mind-set.
