Thanks rstark18! , that explains why some of us weren't having any problems.

I just installed iOS4GM on my iPhone 3G. I today while driving it dawned on me to do the same test I did with iOS3.1.3. I called my answering machine and left myself a message. The volume of my voice this time (as opposed to 3.1.3) was very normal. I could hear myself very clearly and I DID NOT sound like I was talking from the end of a long tunnel as I did before. So after all that it does look like it was an Apple issue. In iOS4 they did upgrade the bluetooth stack so this is probably what fixed it. Unfortunately they didn't implement the latest AVRCP stack which allows FULL steering wheel control (but that's a different thread).

Can't tell you how helpful this is! After nearly giving myself a stroke on many occasions hollering to make myself heard while trying to talk via BT (and sounding to my wife like I was yelling at her), problem is SOLVED! I had almost given up on hands-free calling in my III. No more crazy-looking guy driving down the road looking as if he is yelling at his imaginary passenger . . .

I have an iP4 now so I cleared out my 3G and reloaded iOS4 on it to give the 3G to a friend. The 3G is much snappier now with the reload from scratch (and not a restore). You might want to try it if you like iOS4 but that means reloading all you info manually from scratch.

I'm not sure if my mic volume is low, but I've found that since the iOS 4 update on my iPhone 3GS, two things have happened:

    1. The phone's ringtone plays through the front speaker. (Sometimes there's one Prius default ring, then switches to the phone's ringtone.)

    2. The other person is playing at full-blast on the front speaker, with no apparent way to turn it down.

I have bluetooth, but not the NAV system and so all the hacks about headlights and accessing the diagnostic menu to increase the mic gain don't work for me. Does anyone know how to increase the mic gain without the nav system? My 2010 III just came with the JBL sound system with XM already activated.

That is great that all of you can tinker with the secret menu through the NAV system, but some of us got the JBL package without the NAV and it included BT. No screen to pull a secret menu up on and Toyota is no help. Any non-NAV users out there figure this out yet? The laws in Georgia have changed and now you can't even touch your phone will driving, BUT everyone I try and talk to tells me I sound like I am at the end of a tunnel and I end up shouting as loud as I can just to talk to someone. And I can only imagine what that looks like to someone watching me. Either I am going to get pulled over for using my phone in my hand or because the officer might think I need a white padded room.

What phone are you using. Since this thread started I have moved to an iPhone 4 and the problem has gone away. I think this is more to do with iOS 4 than the actual phone.
