Help me spend - or save - my money. Bottom line is that the out-the-door price for a III with leather/solar/nav will be about $34K (or a little less) after all the fees and taxes.

Before I started looking, I had some idea about invoice and MSRP, but I wasn't prepared for several thousand dollars worth of additional fees. That is what bothers me the most about the price. Not to mention that I was hoping the bottom line would be lower. FWIW, this is a car that is already on the lot. They had a potential buyer previously, but the deal fell through. It has the Toyoguard Protection, which I would not have chosen, but I am happy with the other options and the color. Other estimates in person and online from other dealers are almost exactly the same, and in those cases I would have to wait for my "preference" to arrive.

I have read the thread about what others paid, though sometimes it is hard to compare, as some posts are for Gen IIs, and some posts are for Gen IIIs with different options than the above. I have also read the Consumer Reports guide and everything else I can get my hands on. I suspect I can get the price down by a few hundred. What say you? Good or bad price? Should I just live with paying those fees?

    I say...
    Bad price.

Just playing around at Edmunds and the Toyota site using an Atlanta zip code, a model III with your options would be expensive at 30K. I would look around even if it's out of your immediate area.

There sure are a lot of fees to get you to 34K. Heck, 34K is a high price for me and I am looking for a model V with Advanced Tech.

I went through the same "sticker shock" experience, especially when I realized I had to pay more than $4000 to get that solar roof. If you can live without the solar roof, there is a far cheaper alternative. Get the Prius II ($22,000 + $805 (delivery, processing, and handling fee)) add dealer leather ($1400) and GPS (portable Garmin $300 or wait for an aftermarket head unit for ~$1000) for a total of $24,505 - $25,205.

    Wow.
    I have two observations?
    1. why would you add leather to a III and get a sunroof/NAV added blah blah?
Why not just get a IV with sunroof package so you get the car equipped right from factory -- warranteed from factory - and having the rest of the perks that go with a IV with all of those goodies. Even with USB and safety connect, it's $31K or close.

    2. I have cars available both ways: V packages with AY and also IVs with sunroofs. Call me or email me at the contact info below!

Thanks to all. I am renewing my efforts at expanding my shopping area. It does seem to make a difference in the add-on fees. Dianne, good observations. Originally, I thought I could save a little by going with a III with upgrades, but now I wonder if it is worth it. I will over pricing again. I have been surprised that no dealer has suggested the IV package to me. You are the first. Thanks for your offer to get in touch. I may well do that, even though I live across the country.

Extended warranty, service plan, paint protection, seat protection is all a bunch of inflated BS for the dealers to get more money. Initially I got a price of 24280 out the door for a III with nothing. Now that inventory is building a bit and I expanded my search area I got an offer for 23550 out the door with mats and bumper protector from Acton Toyota in MA. for a III in Winter Grey. So in the next few weeks I will be hopefully picking it up if nothing goes wrong.

Well, folks, I did it! We came to a good enough compromise, and I am happy. BTW, even if Dianne is not in your state, you should get in touch with her. I did! I needed to move quickly, and ended up finding a car that suited me locally, but I found that Dianne is a good resource wherever you live.

Will post later on the newbies and owners' pic threads, but in case you are interested, here is the breakdown.

Silver/Misty Gray Prius III, solar roof/nav, leather, bumper protecter, impact sensor, Toyoguard (road assistance, 1st oil change, etc.) This car was on the lot and all options were already installed. I think this was the only car with solar that I saw on the lots around here, BTW, and I live in a large metro area. I also searched other states and finding solar was not easy. However, new allocations are always in the works.

    Price: 30,645.00
    Admin fees: 595.00
    Total selling price: 31,240.00
    Sales tax: 1874.00
    Title: 18.00
    Warranty protection act: 3.00

    Out the door price: 33,135.00

Will pick her up within the week after I get some money in the mail!

    Leading a horse to water....

Mary, if that is the very best deal you could cut locally and are happy with the car, then there is no reason we shouldn't all be happy for you! :)
