OK, President Bush signed the law yesterday and it is now OK to drive solo in the commute lane in California. However, you first need to go to the CA DMV website and download and complete form REG 1000 (rev. 8/2005) DFM Application for Clean Air Vehicle Stickers, pay the $8.00 sticker fee and also include a copy of your FasTrax account billing sheet in certain CA counties.

I downloaded the app., wrote the check and included the FasTrax document and it is in the mail today! I am very happy about this finally happening.

Are there any charges with opening a Fastrak account? I don't need to drive over any bridges in the South Bay.

Yep, $40 to open a FastTrak account (brought the confirmation printout with me to the DMV), did it online this a.m., printed out the form from the DMV for a clean air sticker, waited in line for about 1 hour, they took my $8.00, gave me a receipt, and forwarded it to Sacramento. They said it would be 1-2 weeks to get a sticker.

I can't wait, it will cut my commute in 1/2.

Also, I rarely go over the bridges, but if the fee was $48 instead of $8, I would still pay for the sticker. :)

Okay, so it's actually costs $48 to get this sticker and since I don't need to cross the bridge, the transponder goes unused.

I still plan to get the sticker since driving on 101 is a bear. But can't you mail in the application? You don't need to go to DMV in person, right? Once you get the sticker, can you drive in the HOV lanes right away?

Yes, once you receive the sticker you can start driving in the HOV lane. If you cross a bridge (even in the carpool lane) with 1 person, you still have to pay the bridge toll.

Yes, you can mail the application in, I just wanted to make sure the DMV received it, and I had a copy of the receipt from them.

My commute involves 880 south, 237 west and 101 north.

Correct me if I am wrong (please) but my understanding is if driving in the HOV lane during designated commute hours, you can cross the bridge just like those with 2 or 3 in the car for free.

Tax break is a one time thing.

I want a break on my car registration every year!

I also want free parking at city meters. Los Angeles has it. Make it throughout the state!

My friend went to the DMV in SF yesterday and they refused to take the application. Told him he had to mail it to Sacto.
