I'm with you about the 2010. I bought an 09 to replace my 04. I had seen the 2010 prior to my purchase. I didn't like the interior of the 10, so I decided to buy the 09. When it comes time to replace my 09, I will probably switch from the Prius if the same interior styling is being used on the current MY Prius.

What are all the reasons why you like the 2008 better?

i understand completely. i have not been drawn to the gen III at all except to have a new car. i dont think it looks any better inside or out, and there seem to be a lot of mixed opinions as to weather anything else is better either.:)

We have a 2005 and a 2010. The 2005 has been a good car but everything about the 2010 is better.

Ditto, to each his own. I had an '05 and now have a '10. The only thing that I don't like about my '10 III is that i don't have 3 door SKS like my old '05 II. Oh and the ocassional rattles...heh, not fun, but still a better car overall.

Same here. I get the '05 and wife drives the '10. I'm envious, '10 is a better car in every way.

Styling and Features between '08 & '10 aside, how's the overall MPG between these two generations on the similar driving condition?

The front on the 3rd gen looks better and I quiet like the way they have moved the gear selector to the centre, but I have to say the energy consumption monitor leaves a lot to be desired on the 3rd gen. The 2nd gen makes a bold statement about what the car is doing and is certainly a conversation piece. I hope that the 4th gen (or will Toyota encourage us to think of it as the 5th gen?) has a much clearer energy consumption monitor and a bigger boot (trunk) if they can make the battery pack smaller. Should be possible - mobile phones used to be bricks.

My wife gets the same mileage in the 2010 as she did in the 2005 - 45mpg average, driving the same locations (to/from work and waaaaay to much shopping).

I LOVE my 05! I have driven the 2010 and I liked the additional power! But really disliked the interior! My neighbor has a 2010 and they average 50mpg! I get over 52 in my 05!!!! I am with ya! I love gen 2!

I have not driven the 10 but sat in one a couple of times and was always struck how the front seats seemed to be perfect in that they had headrest supoport right where you needed it. You leaned back just a little on the 10 and the headrests were there unlike my 07 which has really no head support as the rests are so far back.
You have to make an effort to rest on them.
The 10 seats seemed to be really nice.

We have two 2009s and wouldn't trade them for 2010s.

There are features of the 2010 that I prefer - bigger engine, better front seats, no serpentine belt. I didn't like the confined feeling I got from the intrusive center consol, though.

This is subjective but I like the looks of the 2009s better and get a kick out of the MFD display. So do my passengers, who always watch it with great interest whenever it's my turn to drive somewhere.

But the thing I liked the best about the 2009s was the discount Toyota offered for buying some of the last gen 2s before the gen 3s hit the shores. We saved $4,950 on the second one (bought just before the gen 3s arrived) and a little less on the first, bought several months earlier. It's hard to beat cold, hard cash savings.

Well, used to be, but the Kenwood head unit, chassis plate and TRD Rear sway bar have made my '05 at least an equal with any '08 :D

Not to feed a generational war but here's my opinion.

First of all I wanted a New Car...I had driven a used 17 year old Accord for 6+ years so was looking forward to a new start...wasn't really considering used...

When I researched cars I found Prius and Prius Chat. Long story short, in the period right before the release of the 2010 I had a great deal on the table for a New 2009. But I balked and waited because I wanted- HAD to see the 2010.

Well in the following months I've ended up getting a Honda Fit. I don't so much regret not getting a 2010 Prius. But I often regret not pulling the trigger on the 2009. I think the 2010 is great, and needed. The Prius was in need of an update and change. Beltless Engine, Electric Accessories, Standard gas tank, no thermos coolant heating system...the 2010 is an improvement...inevitable evolution of the product.

But there was a LOT right about the 2009 that Toyota didn't get quite right in the 2010. The Gen 2 is the classic that hit the ball out of the park. I see the 2010 as being a ground rule double...

I think if I could go back? I'd make that deal on the new 2009 and I'd probably be pretty happy today.

I wonder if anyone's thought about *moving* the shifter assembly
up into some available location on the dash, or building a small
extension housing to get it higher, and taking out the "bridge"
entirely. Probably way too soon for anyone to think of tearing
into their spanky-new 2010s to that extent, but an adaptive
return to the old and largely favored ergonomics is still something
    to consider.
