BMW Traded for Prius....Lovin' it!

Helllo All!!!

I'm a newbie to this forum/chat. This is just a thread to see who else may have left the world of performance to join the practical and fun world of Priusville. I traded my 06 BMW 330i for an '08 Prius (Pkg 4 w/heated leather seats and 9 speaker JBL). I have had it only a week but am simply loving the whole experience. Don't get me wrong I loved the BMW for what it was but the enjoyment, options, space and savings are just so much fun. I have taken 4 adult co workers to lunch, family for ice cream etc w/no issue. The first fill up was today and I laughed all th[/B]e way to the pump. My normal $60 stop was $27 dollars after nearly 450 miles! The work I do has me travelling from site to site and the Bluetooth is wonderful. The ipod adapter for my iphone makes the music and phone piece easy and user friendly. I'm IN. This chat has been great and thanks to all who post. I have learned how to change my Smart Key to all doors, stop the back up beeper and the seatbelt chime. Thanks to all for the info. I posted a few pics of my new addition and the Beamer that was exchanged. (See Photo Albums) Anyhow glad to be here and thanks to the moderator and participants. --- Joe

Welcome aboard!

I usually cringe now when I fill up my 350Z since it takes premium and usually gets <1/2 the mileage of my Prius.

I only get 15-17 mpg now on my Z... sometimes as low as 13.x mpg due to mostly short city drives. When I had a long commute w/highway driving, I'd never gotten better than 23 or 24.x mpg on it.

Two different worlds...the Prius and the Z. I was using premium as well which contributed to my increased savings for sure. I think I am going to change my tires to the 195 to help with handling. Thanks for the welcome btw. I

Welcome. I went from an '05 Prius to an '03 BMW 330ci convertible and back to a '10 Prius. I always tell my friends, there's a tool for every job and currently the Prius is being an awesome tool...in other words, currently reliablity > amazing handling.

Welcome. I'm new here too. I'm about to sell my 2006 300C-SRT. It was a lot of fun, but now I'm having a different kind of fun in my 2010 Prius.

I went from a BMW too. I actually had a 2003 M3! And while I loved the performance, I hated the repair and maintenance costs. With it approaching 90,000 miles, I decided to drop it fast since it was going to need sone work. I haven't looked back.

Huh, my Evo's been getting 24-25ish in mixed city/highway (no AC though). And I actually hit boost once in a while too. I'm a little surprised that your N/A is getting that low.

Joey, you sound as exceited as my co-worker David. After moving more than 2X farther away from work, he traded in his 3 series for our neighbor's ORIGINAL Prius ... the Gen I. He actually laughs at how little he spends on gas in comparison to the 3, and how far he goes before filling up with such a small amount of gallons. He was so crazy about his Gen I that he bought a Gen II for his wife. Welcome to the nut house.
;)

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome. I am excited with the practical side of things. I also admit the car amazes me on many levels. I just didn't know they were as roomy and available with all the convenience options. Glad to see I'm not alone in the "nut house" especially the sector that dropped the high performance for the practical. Not much to say when it comes to the gas mileage other than amazing!

Welcome... :welcome:

...I do take a bit of exception to your comment on performance (which you've now said twice). The prius is a performance car... maybe not in the sort of test you're used to, but "performance" implies a fittness for purpose and the prius is extremely fit for the purpose most of us should be buying a car for (if we drive on roads and not race tracks) ...getting us and our stuff around efficiently.

I expect you're going to enjoy the high performance prius you just got at every fillup... and even more when you think of the fillups you aren't needing.:)

Performance is in the eye of the beholder :) ..... point taken. I simply mean the term used in most automotive racing circles and the kind that cost you thousands to maintain. You are indeed correct that the performance is there ...just different. I was used to high performance handling, cornering, acceleration and braking. I have traded it for high performance fuel mileage, state of the art hybrid technology and truly ....higher performance bells and whistles. I didn't have the bluetooth hooked up in my old car, didn't have heated seats, didn't have the rear camera and didn't have touch screen controls. So I stand corrected on the terminology and meaning. No offense to the chat for sure as I did buy in for a different kind of performance.

I don't know anything about your Evo, but per Side-by-Side Comparison, my Z after adjustment by formula to new EPA method is rated 17 city/24 highway, 19 combined. The Nissan 3.5L VQ V6 was never known to be really efficient, back then.

The highway portions of my commute weren't level and we had some crap California reformulated gas that does hurt mileage somewhat.

What year is your Evo? I'd be curious to compare CR's mileage test results on your generation of Evo vs. my Z.

(So that I don't post wrong info due to foggy memory... EPA numbers below were prior to the MY 08+ switchover.)
I posted about my Bay Area commute before at PriusOnline.com • View topic - Finally... Pic of my new ride!.
