Center Speaker Rattle

    I did a search but apparently there is too much to sift through, so forgive me if I am being redundant. I've been lucky and have a relatively rattle and squeak free car. The only rattle I have is when I hit a frost heave and then the center speaker shakes. You can actually feel it have a little too much play in its housing. Is there any way to make it more secure? I'd hate to have to take the dash apart. If that's the case, I'll have the dealer do it. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

    I have no idea what a "frost heave" is, but I do know you can lift the center speaker right out of the dash. Just pull up on the front edge and it'll pop right out. There's just a couple of clips holding it in.

    Don't pull too hard. If the front edge doesn't pop right out, that means I'm confused and I meant to say the back edge. Either way, it's simple to get out.

    Once it's out, you might as well disconnect it too. It's rather useless.

    Ya know... that's not a bad idea. Maybe I can use that as a tray for my fries. 101 uses for the useless middle speaker.

    One poster a while ago found that the cover over the speaker's magnet had fallen off, causing a rattle.

    I have found that where a rattle sounds like it is coming from is not where it is.
    Example: I have been hearing a quiet, scratching like squeak seeming to be from the dash. I was thinking it might be that mirror. But no, it was my shaver in the cupholder.

    Dan...say it ain't so!!! You shave n' drive??? I definitely know it is the center speaker because when I press down on it, it does NOT rattle over frost heaves.

    Usually at traffic lights.

    It's easy to pry the speaker. Use something like a plastic spatula or putty spreader.

    Dan... thanks... I'll try that when I get home from work today. Looking forward to a HOT weekend here in the NE. Heat index tomorrow... 105. Feels like good 'ol South Florida here today.

    I've found my dash area around the MFD is much cooler now that made a cooling vent for it; removed the center speaker. :)

    1) by "front" please make clear whether y9u mean "towards me while sitting' or "front of the car."
    2) frost heave is when pavement is raised by the expanding wet soil below it, due to sustained cold temperatures.

    Okay, so clue me in: What is wrong with the center speaker? Does it do nothing? Does it only come on for AM? Is it just a paper thin thing?

    Am I asking too many questions? Have I used up my supply of ???

    Pry up the side towards you.

    The center speaker puts out L+R at midrange frequencies, much like the center channel of a surround system. Unlike a surround system, it will also produce sounds at L or R, where a surround system would only put sounds on the center channel that are equal from left AND right (within tolerances). To me, the center speaker seems to kill stereo separation. It would have been fine if it excluded sounds that are exclusively L or R.
