Does anyone know what "Speed Tones" are? What's the difference between those and Speed Dial?

Speed tones are Telephone Touch Tones that represent account numbers, credit card numbers, passcodes, etc, that can be transmitted over automated phone systems to gain user access. Those tones can be saved in the Prius bluetooth phone.

Speed Dial numbers are phone numbers saved in one-touch access locations. The prius does that too. They are the only only dialing means when the car in motion, except for voice recognition. With VR you can dial by number or by name (voice tag), when the car is in motion.

So how would one use them? Let's say I had my voicemail number and then needed a code to access? Is it for that? Once I call my voicemail, how do I have it send the tones?

Yes, that's correct. Let's say you like to check you bank account balance everday. You need your bank's phone number, you account number, and an pin number.
All this can be automated in your phone book. Save the phone number as speed dial #1, account number as speed tone #1, and pin as speed tone #2.
Now call your bank, by going to your saved speed dials and selecting the number. When connection is made push the "0-9" button, then the "speed tone" button. Now select the appropriate saved speed tones when prompted and they will be sent.

    To program all this...
The speed tone needs to be stored,or registered, in your prius phonebook. This is done by first having the phone sceen on the MFD, select settings, select speed dial, at the bottom is where you register a speed tone. (Much like registering a speed dial at the top.)

    Now for use:

When you have dailed or speed-dialed a number, after a connection is made, a button with "0-9" appears. Push it. Then a button that says "Speed Tone" appears. push it. You now have access to your saved speed tones that can be one-touch accessed and sent.

Another similar but different feature is pauses and waits, appended to saved phonebook number. Like an extension.

They are programmed as "p" pause and "w" wait extensions to phone numbers in your phone book. The saved phone number in your phone book would look like this example: 678-463-4569w2212. Where 2212 is the extension for that phone number. When the number is dialed, and connection is made, you then push the "Send Tone" button, and the 2212 extension will be dialed..

Works like it does in your cell phone. And your cell phone manual probably has a better explaination than the prius manual. The explaination for this feature in pretty much non-existent in the prius manual.

When you program the number with the needed code, you enter the phone number and then enter a "p" at the end, and save the number. Then follow the directions in the owners manual for entering speed tones and save the code to a speed tone number. Now, when you dial the number it will pause at the p, you then press the "0-9" button on the screen, then the speed tones button on the subsequent screen, then the button with the saved code on the third screen. Quite convoluted if you ask me, and somewhat dangerous because you have to take your eyes off the road three times to press buttons.

An alternative is to use the wait button when initially entering the phone number. The difference in this case is that you enter the phone number, then a "w" (wait), then the code (e.g., 123-4567w9876). When you dial a number with a wait the dialed number will pause as above, you then press the "0-9" button, but this time you press the Send button and the code will now be sent. Still convoluted, but with this method you only have to take your eyes off the road twice.

Speed tones are completely different from "pause" p and "wait" w. And speed tones don't require the phone number to be appended with p or w.
Speed Tones are stored just like Speed Dial numbers, except they aren't phone number, they are access codes. So you dial or speed dial a phone number, when connection is made, select "0-9", select "speed tone" and you now have one-touch access to all your speed tones.
This feature is meant for long codes and multiple codes

Good explaination, this is meant for short, single extensions.

    Re: What are 'Speed Tones"?

Thanks for the good input. It's certainly true this info does not appear in the user manual, so I'm very gald for the informative posts!

It's curious that this system does not handle an embedded 'p' in the phone number like other dialing systems.
Others understand to dial until the 'p' is found, pause for 2 seconds at the 'p', then automatically dial the next series until another p (or w), or the end of the string is encountered. No touching other keys required with a 'p'.

I think you are explaining that this system just doesn't behave that way. Rats. But if I've misunderstood please let me know. I like to dial by name once, and let the system do the rest.

    Re: What are 'Speed Tones"?

Actually, "p" does work. I have my voice mail number on speed dial, followed by a "w", followed by "#" (what you push during the greeting to access your voice mail account), a "p", and then my 4-digit PIN. While it's ringing, I push "0-9" as described above, then "Send" for the "#-p-PIN" to be automatically entered during the greeting. Of course, the problem is if I have messages, then I can't enter the digits I need to, depending on whether I have messages or not, etc.

    I don't see a "Send Tone" button.
