I just updated my iPhone 3G to the new OS4. Now, when I hook my USB connector to the built-in USB port of my Prius, I get a different error message as shown in the ScreenShot below. Now simply a Dismiss button. No longer are you stuck with that Yes/No choice. In In addition, it consistently syncs with the head unit. :cheer2:
Syncing was hit or miss with OS 3.x

So some things are a bit better with the new OS. Can't blame the PRIUS for the odd interface alone for the iPod/iPhone....that is Apple® not letting their proprietary iPod controls be externalized on any device that isn't Apple® Branded.

The issue behind the warning is that 2G cell phone signals have significant amplitude-modulated (AM) content that can be picked up, rectified and presented as audio noise on speakers. Any 2G cell phone creates this kind of noise, and this was a continual problem on the first-gen iPhone with "2.5G" capability when the phone was near powered speakers.

3G signals from the iPhone 3+ phones don't have AM content and don't create the audio noise. The Yes/No version was a carry-over from the old iPhone OS, and it's nice it's been changed to a "Cancel" button.

You will have the same pinging from the 3G, 3GS and even the 4G, if you ever drop down to Edge or GSM....ping ping ping. When I used to work in a video studio, we always had to make people turn OFF their blackberries, as that Edge/GSM pinging would be picked up by the microphones.

If you just installed IOS4, isn't it early to say it consistently syncs better than the previous iPhone OS3??
I hope it's true because I'm considering a new iPhone 4 or else an Android 2.2 smartphone.
How well and reliably the music, bluetooth and address book pairing works with a 2010 Prius will play a big factor in which phone I end up choosing.

I also get this new screen, but for some reason when I connect my now updated iPhone, at the most it will play a song for a little bit and then just stop. If I unplug the phone and then plug it back in, it never sees the USB cable (doesn't show up on my audio screen, doesn't charge the phone). If I then try to plug in a regular ipod, the audio system doesn't see it or charge that either. When I restart the car with an ipod plugged in, it works perfectly. I never had issues with my iphone before the update. Any ideas?

I have the same issue on my non-nav head unit. Plays at best for a few seconds then stops and won't charge when re-plugging, or else the display just shows "ERROR". Seems that iOS4 update totally broke it.

The iPhone/iPod-integration is humiliating in my opinion, but at least it worked with version 3.x...

Mine is working better with IOS4. The new error message seems to do the trick, since there is no yes or no question.

Do you have an iPhone 3G or 3Gs? Also, I am assuming you are using a USB cable, not AUX or BT, right?

FYI: That Error message only comes up when a USB connector is hooked in, so AUX or BT wouldn't ever bring it up. I have a 3G, don't know what @Winescarlet had.

    I have a 3GS, same problem there.

I read some posts on the Apple forum saying that you had to re-initialize the phone with the stereo by hard-resetting it by pressing both home and lock buttons while connected via USB.

Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to work with the Prius stereo, at least for me. But maybe it's worth a try for you.

It is a 3G and the USB cable. It is still important to switch to iPod when plugging the phone.

I think it is a 3Gs issue then since that is what I have. I always switch over to the ipod and continue to have this issue. The 3G iphones did not get all of the new features with the OS4 so I think that is part of the issue.

Thanks to all of you out there on the front lines of the OS4/Prius trials. I was not going to download and install it until I read comments here and from the look of things it seems wise for me to wait. I spend way too much time in my car for my iPhone/USB to work worse than it currently does. From what I've read, OS4 doesn't have any "must haves" for me.

I hope the issue gets resolved, but for now I'll stick with the OS I have.

Again, thanks to all of you.

BTW, is there anyway to revert the iPhone back to a lower OS?

I looked through the last few pages on the Apple forum thread and it looks like most people got it to work by doing an extra reset of the phone after upgrading.
Reset the phone so it reboots (not just turn off the screen or put to sleep) while plugged into the USB and then it started working for them.
As long as you only have to do this once and not every time you use the iPhone in the car, then that seems like a fix.
Can someone try this and verify it works for the 2010 Prius?

As I have already stated in my post at the top of this page - no, it does not work. At least not for me.

I was REALLY hoping that upgrading my 3GS to iOS4 would allow it to magically finally function as a usable USB iPod device. :( Doesn't seem to be the case. Guess I'll have to just stick with the BT connection. Kinda sad that for such a technologically advnaced ar that the USB port is basically relegated to being just a charging station.
