Should I get a pre purchase paid inspection?

Ask the SELLER to do the Toyota 160 point inspection. It costs over $1000. Tell the seller it will come in handy for him/her since buyers will know it's a reliable car and they can add the cost of the inspection to their asking price.

Should YOU have to buy the paid inspection? No. You should not be burdened with this task unless you are absolutely set on buying this, and it doesn't sound like you are especially since you know it's had 2 owners and been in an at least one accident.

So here is exactly what I would do: I'm definitely leaning towards not buying the car, knowing its history. But tell them to do the 160 point inspection anyway. If they agree and everything passes, say we'll talk more. If they don't agree or it doesn't pass, definitely walk away and forget it. There are thousands of priuses being sold out there, especially ones that have never been damaged. I guarantee that you will not be losing out if you walk away. In fact, you will be better off saving time and stress by not buying the car.

Ew. Don't bother. After two accidents and two owners so much can be wrong with a Prius (or any modern car) it'll make you ill. That $5K used Prius could turn into a $10K used Prius real fast.

 

How much are they asking for the car?
If the car is priced at book value I would not even consider it.

I'd only consider it after negotiating a much lower price.
Of course only if you are willing to accept the risks associated with buying a previously damaged car.

Otherwise, why would you even consider it knowing the history?.
There are plenty of Prius out there that have not been wrecked.

For future reference ..

If I was selling my car, which I'm not, any inspections a buyer would like to have would only be paid by them, since I know the car history as sole owner. If the buyer must know the history, they pay.

First owner's already take a huge loss from paying new price to selling used. My car was $30.4k out the door, I'm pretty sure most buyers would be trying to get it for something like $21k (and considering a '10 III / nav is like $25.8k). Not going to happen. As someone else said, that would be financial folly.

Far as I know, there is no requirement for them to pay for an inspection.
