Windshield replacement?

    I searched.

    Our 2010 Model IV got hit by a rock yesterday, a chip with 3 cracks. Not repairable. Dealer recommended a local company who they use, they don't do them in-house. The local company quoted $500 parts and labor. They said the manufacturer is NFM. I asked for OEM and non-OEM options. Did not get an OEM glass quote because they said their suppliers did not carry OEM glass. Called the dealer parts dept. who quoted $1075 just for the part.

    I had a bad experience a number of years ago with Safelite and swore I would never go with non-OEM glass again.

    Unfortunately I have a $1000 deductible on comprehensive.

    From research I've done, many people will not go with non-OEM glass for various reasons. Structural integrity, acoustic properties, and visual distortions are the most common reasons. Other people have had non-OEM glass installed and been perfectly happy. But the only threads on the subject I could find were in the Gen II forums.

    Thanks for any help or advice you can provide.

    I would suggest that you call your insurance agency. Oftentimes, they include windshield repair/replacement as a separate policy line item, which does not use/affect your deductible.

    Several years ago, with State Farm, we had to get our windshield replaced from a truck dropping pebbles on the highway, and they sent someone to our home (from safelite), who came to my driveway to replace it, at zero cost to me. Worth at least calling.

    The OEM windshield has some pretty fancy properties. Amongst other things, UV block out, 55% Solar heat reduction and 80% visible light transmission.

    I would not assume that all non-OEM replacements have the same properties and I would be very reluctant to lose them.

    Wholesale price for the Toyota OEM (Made in Japan) windshield is $375 when the bodyshop ordered it for my car. It takes about 3 day instead of normal 1 day delivery. Just FYI.

    That's an awesome deal. I was about to recommend using Safelite thru AAA or Costco, they offer some type of discount.

    I think PPG makes some of the best aftermarket windshields. More than that, quality labor actually matters unless you like having wind noise or moldings peel off after two years.

    Edit: On my old Prius G2, I replaced the windshield once with a somewhat generic windshield (don't recall the brand) and it was $288 installed. The cheapest generic was about $225 and PPG about $450. But that was a few years ago and the Prius G3 is a new model...

    I just checked my Toyota EPC ( Electronic Parts Catalog ) and the list price is correct at $ 375.00 . The part number is 56101-47905 if you need it. Hope this helps.

    My BMW 325e needed a new windshield. I went to a local Safelite place thinking "a windshield is a windshield, right?". Wrong.

    The first one they put in had a scratch right in the middle of the drivers view. They ordered another one and we carefully checked it before installation. Sure enough, that one was also scratched. Then I told them to just order an OEM BMW windshield. That one arrived and it was fine. Installation went fine. I paid the higher price for OEM.

    In fairness to the local Safelite store, both the scratched windshields arrived at their location from their warehouse or distributor already scratched. They ultimately made it right but it required three trips by me to their store. It just seems to me that the Safelite windshields scratched to easily and were an inferior product.

    That was the first thing I did. Ours is only covered under the comprehensive, there's no $0 deductible for glass with Allstate. I carry high ($1000) deductibles. My rates with Allstate, including maximum liability coverage, are extremely low. We also saved a bunch on our homeowners with them.

    I checked with another local company who can install OEM for $559. I couldn't believe that after getting a dealer quote for the part of $1075. But with the info you guys provided on the wholesale pricing I now understand how they can do it for that price.

    This site is a great tool. Thanks for the help guys.

    Just curious. I know someone awhile back who had to replace their windsheld. He just got a OEM glass and paid the insurance deductible. Just curious bc that is not the first time I've heard people critical about safelite.

    The price difference between the dealer and the independent glass shop is typical in my experience. Most dealers subcontract the work to a glass shop, so the price difference is their mark up.

    The glass shops will also come to your house or office to do the install, so you don't have the inconvenience of dropping the car at the dealer.

    Update: The original price the dealer parts dept. gave me was way wrong. The 2nd time I called another guy told me $450 and said he could even discount it down to $407. The glass company they use will meet me there Mon to do the install for $150.

    The other company I had contacted said they could do OEM for $559. But when I contacted them again by email with the markings on my current windshield and the Toyota part #, they called back to say it would not have Toyota markings but would meet OEM specs. They said it would be a Pilkington, they make a quality product.

    Any bets on when I get to the dealership Mon that the glass they got in is also a Pilkington?

    Just had an independent shop replace windshield as reciommended by dealership. It was a PPG part w/ gasket from dealership. Indenpendent shop said that PPG IS the OE part! I just paid my $100 deductable and was out the door in 2.5 hours.

    I just had to replace the windshield in my 2010, IV Prius. Safelite said the replacement part number was FW 3140, which I think is made by Pilkington. I did not use Safelite due to a lot of criticism on the net about their work. Another company came to my home and installed Pilkington FW 3139. The installer was gone before I noticed this. Are these two part number interchangeable? Did they use the wrong part? I would like some intel on this before I call the installer and ask any questions.

    Also, is their any rubber moulding that goes around the windshield? It appears that the new windshield is just glued directly to the car with the glass edge showing all the way around. I admit that I did not look at my car before the installation began, so do not know if there was any moulding around the edge of the glass.

    Toyota does not make their own windshield.

    PPG and Pilkington are OEM windshield suppliers.

    I had my windshield replaced in May, independent shop recommended by State Farm and the dealer. They used Pilkington, looks identical to the original except for the logo. No problems at all.

    If you have LKA be sure to tell them not to hit the camera, it's pretty close to the glass.
