I think it may be time to give up on my '98 Saab. It's in the shop with what may turn out to be expensive electrical repairs (being evaluated now).

My goal is to purchase a 2010 Prius IV with NO other options in Silver w/Misty Grey leather interior. I guess I could also go for a Pkg III, but then I wouldn't get the lumbar support or leather or 3 door SKS. Hmmmm.

I live in NC and unfortunately the Southeast Toyota mafia adds lots of extra charges, plus I don't see a Pkg IV in inventory without NAV and/or sunroof, neither of which I intend to purchase.

Can anyone give me advice on where to purchase that will allow me to get a great deal? I guess I should consider purchasing in VA since they are not part of the SET mafia?

ADVICE welcomed. I don't want to get fleeced. I plan to pay cash for whatever I purchase.

I guess I could add leather seats in the aftermarket at some point. I'm concerned about lumbar support, but maybe that's not a huge deal?

I would go with III - personal preference tho - didnt care much about IV price premium for seat / 3 dr SKS etc ... the seats sucks no matter what (comparing to my bmws) and 3 dr SKS is no biggie imho ... hope this helps! best of luck!

saw ur 2nd post - if lumabr is important - test drive both and decide - it mayb very well be worth to you ...

Well good news for now... looks like what needs fixed on my current car ('98 Saab) is totally worth doing and I can order the 2 parts I need online and my local shop will be happy to just do the labor part for me.

Okay. I can continue to wait for a new car. (I'm busy spending $$$$ on my dog's chemo, trying to keep her feeling well and extend her life at the moment).

This is my preference for now. My goal all along has been to wait until 2011 and I think I should be able to do that. My current auto only has 94K mi on it.

Both the seat and the leather in IV felt sub-par compared with other vehicles in the $27K ~ $28K range (e.g. Accord) The extra $3K is rather over priced for what you get.

When you do go for the Prius, you can get a good after market leather interior installed with heated seats, and lumbar support for under $1500.

I just bought a 2010 V at my local dealer. What I did was to go online to the Toyota web site and "build" the model that I wanted. Then I choose the option to get quotes from local dealers and sent out requests to 4 dealers that were in my general area. Once they all responded I took their quotes to my local dealer and negotiated a price on the exact model that I wanted and then used the quotes that I got to get his price down to at least equal the lowest quote. Once that was done the salesman got on his computer (they didn't have the model that I wanted) and located exactly what I wanted at another dealer. The next day the car was mine - they just worked out a swap with the other dealer (something that they do all the time).

Of course the downside to getting quotes from several local dealers is that you are going to get lots of phone calls and emails from them for a while...

I bought a II but for my part think the seats aren't bad (not coming from a BMW, though!) and with the $1000 rebate in Chicagoland got $3300 off MSRP, so I would expect you would be able to get at least that if not more, adjusting for whether or not there is a rebate in your area. Glad your car not as bad as you thought and good luck whatever you decide. We have two 2010s and couldn't be happier!

Glad to hear that your car is fixable and hopefully the fix will work and the car will be a reliable ride for you.

I would recommend that you do the "build your toyota" at their website (entering in your zipcode) and see if you even have the option of getting the car without the NAV system. In the bay area, you can't get a bare bones package IV, they all come with the NAV.

I really liked the feel of the leather vs the cloth seats. I came from a 1989 Integra (cloth), so having the leather and lumbar was a new experience for me. Best recommendation I could give is to take at least a package IV out for a test drive (gearing up for 2011) and see if you like the car.

Prius 2010 -III owner - my advice - stick to a conventional car. Too late for me now!!! It's just too weird!

Get a II. Best price point. Most of the optioned-out levels are sub-par options, like the mediocre NAV, stereo, even problematic bluetooth on the III. Just get that stuff after-market. And, the self-park is useless, collision avoidance doesn't etc., you get the picture, lol.

Thank you for the good advice, all!

Yeah I don't need any of the extras because I have a Garmin GPS that also does bluetooth and it works quite nicely. I would never pay for the built-in NAV when I have something better at 1/8 the cost.

And no need for moonroof either. Got it now on my Saab and I rarely use it.

Don't need the fancy stereo. Wouldn't mind it, of course, but don't need it. I don't subscribe to sat. radio.

Would like the 3 door SKS but having never had it and being the only person who will use the car, perhaps having it on 1 door only would be fine? 97% of the time it's just me driving w/no other passengers.

I have leather seats and wonderful lumbar support on my Saab, along with power adjust and memory, and the car is almost 13 yrs old and it came standard! C'mon Toyota! While I don't necessarily have to have leather, it is nice. Lumbar support is important to me. Seat height adjustment is important because I'm only 5'1". At least 3rd Gen has it. Without it I wouldn't even consider purchasing a Prius.

I guess a Pkg III would be the most economical for the features I do want and then I could do the leather/lumbar aftermarket like Marduk said above.

Would I love all the fancy schmancy options like what's on the V? Yes, of course I would. But no, I'm not going to pay for them.

I wish I didn't love my Saab...but I do. I really do. It's expensive to fix, of course, and the gas mileage is nothing compared to Prius, but it has served me well and I've enjoyed it and those seats....ahhhhh. I'm not going to purchase another Saab though for many reasons and will go with a Prius but I want to wait.

P.S. Codyroo, good points. I'm so against the extortionist SET (southeast toyota) mafia that I will surely purchase my Prius outside SET area when I am ready. I refuse to pay dealer extra markups and all the B.S. they tack on. I'll go where I get the best deal within a reasonable distance.

Please don't think about dealer mark-ups. They mean nothing. What mean something is the final Out The Door number. It doesn't matter at all on how they got there, just that the both of you agree it is a number you like. You could tell the dealer that you don't like the dealer fee, but that 's what 99% of buyers say, so it's nothing new to them. Just speak in terms of OTD and you will get exactly what you want.
Ah-ha. additionally, I just love my V w/Navi. The lumbar, leather, and Navi are only a small but important part of what makes my car so special.
p.s. you mentioned "c'mon Toyota" rearding power seats...the reason they left them out amongst other things is the obvious weight savings. I'm sure power seats are not a light option.

You get used to the Prius after a while and it seems normal.

The Prius (and all HSD) regenerative braking is a really cool thing - as you're slowing, the hybrid battery is being recharged.
