Why do I like music that's older than I am?

The history and evolution rock and roll at time get's co-mingled with "pop'
music. I'm not competant to say where the shifting, fuzzy boundary was.

Here is a two-dimensional time line -- more accurately a "time river" --
that tries to show the fluid, roiling, expansive nature of the explosive
music scene from the early '50s to late 70's:

Rock and Roll grew out of rhythm & blues, which of course grew out of blues. It all has roots in slave music, which combined European folk music with African rhythms. The farther it gets from its roots (both the European and the African) the more vapid it becomes. Leading to such things as metal and rap, which have less musical content than random construction noise. They are the musical counterpart of contemporary "art" where random splotches of pigment are passed off to gullible cretins as "art." Occasionally something worthwhile comes up, such as Bob Marley, when a new and untouched traditional style is injected into the popular culture, but before long it is bastardized and brought down to the common level of the garbage sold for popular consumption.

You can still find real music in traditional cultures that have not yet been defiled by commercialism.

I have to admit that not all modern music is rubbish, but you kinda have to ferret out the good stuff. It's there. Just look for it. The music on FM radio here IS rubbish. I now just listen to AM talk radio. Even if my Prius had no FM radio I wouldn't miss it. I unfortunately don't share the taste of most of the population which the radio stations cater to.

    Right now I'm listening to:

Town called Malice - The Jam

    before that

    Early Winter - Gwen Stefani

    before that

    Erasure
    John Mayer

Pop music in this country has been killed by the media. The main reason appears that the current brand of trashy rock music can be played electronically--without musicians--which saves on TV commercials. The other factor is the entertainment and advertising market is geared to teenagers, really the 18-34 crowd, while older people with the real consumption power are left out of the formula. Their tastes don't count.

So blame it on advertising, which is what drives business in this country these days--mainly through TV, which dominates everything. Politics, Sports, you name it...

This country has a glorious history of jazz, classical and show music. The old pop standards. Even some of the rock music of Elvis Presley and others in the 50s and 60s. Folk/country (ever hear James Taylor?).And the Beatles as well. It's all down the tubes now, thanks to the advertisers.
The kids are being fed crap, and many are growing up without ever hearing decent music. That's progress. Or the lack of it.

although it isn't my taste, and i feel that there is a lot of negative attached to it, every now and then i'll hear some rap/hiphop which actually sounds well crafted.:)
