Extended Warranty

    I just recently bought a 2010 prius, they offered 1599 for the extended warranty. I refused.
    When is the latest I can buy the extended warranty?
    Is warrantyshack the better place?

    You have until the expiration of the basic warranty -- 36 months or 36,000 miles (whichever comes first) -- to buy a Toyota extended warranty.

    I advise that you wait until you approach 36 months or 36,000 miles before deciding on whether to get an extended warranty. That way, you'll have real world experience with the car and be better informed as to (1) whether you think an extended warranty is worthwhile, and (2) which extended warranty to get (if any), in terms of maximum months/miles, taking into account your past and anticipated future driving miles.

    WarrantyShack.com (you must mention PriusChat) is the better place, e.g., it sells a Toyota Extra Care Platinum Plan 7 years/100,000 miles/$0 deductible extended warranty for $1055 (it retails for $1850).

    I paid $1000.00 for the same warranty from my dealer, but it took a lot of haggling to get there. We told him we'd think about it a few times during the negotiations and then he started making offers. I'm a repeat customer there and told him I understood the mark-up. I don't mind them making money, they need to do that to pay the bank....but be just be fair. With all the technology on the car we thought it was good insurance. Consider your home/household insurance premiums.

    That's a good price for a dealer, i just paid $965 from Acton for the same thing.

    When we bought my wifes Acura a few years ago I had a printout with an online quote for a good price. When the Finance guy went into his spiel with astronomic numbers I laid the online quote on his desk and told him i would rather buy from him but he had to match the competition. He did. He said the dealership was making less that $100 on the policy, i told him that wasn't bad profit for 5 minutes work.:D

    I got a quote using Acton Toyota I'm paying 854. Sweet!

    Question:
    Will the price go up if I wait till the end of my 3 year warranty?
    Since Acton Toyota is in Massachusetts, is my warranty coverage the same?
    Could you tell me what I am covered, is there any difference between the 3year and 8year?

    Paying $854 or $965 is still a bad deal on a car that has proven reliability. I predict you will never use it.

    I just bought my Prius III on Saturday, the 10th, and I did NOT get the extended warranty from the dealer, mostly because my SO (who bought hers last week) found this forum! However, I have some concerns.

    I notice the website is not secure, but personal information is still required to get a quote. As a web developer for the government, I can say this is NOT GOOD PRACTICE. Lots of hackers out there who get that kind of info and it's worse than buying the warranty from the dealer. I'd like to get a quote, but I don't want to do it through the website if I have to fill out that information. I can always give it to him/her/them later, through more secure channels.

    Does anyone know how to contact WarrantyShack.com without requesting a quote or submitting personal information? I would greatly appreciate it.

    Fine with me if I don't. I paid $1,050 at the dealer last summer for a 100,000 mile/7 year 0 deductible warranty (they matched the warranty shack price). To the other person who said there have been virtually no repairs, read more posts. Yes they are very rare, but when they occur, it seems to be $3,000 or $4,000. Also, the Gen I and II each are a bit different and I would bet the farm that if nothing else my built in blue tooth will break within 7 years which would be a few hundred dollars. Then there was the time my friend's Toyota Avalon CD player ate the CDs a few months out of warranty...I am sure lots of guys on this site could have a new one bought and installed in a few hours but not me (and even if I could its cheaper for me to work and bill my clients by the hour). So there is no right or wrong answer as long as everyone gets the WS price, to each his own :D

    Let me add some questions:
    1. Will the contemplated failure be covered by the extended warranty or will it be listed under an exclusion?
    2. Will the warranty company otherwise attempt to evade honoring the warranty on a covered part?
    3. Will the warranty company be solvent or still be in business when you make your claim?
    4. Will your dealership accept the warranty, or will it make you pay and then have you bring your issue to the warranty company?
    5. Will a part failure be covered under the manufacturer's warranty on key hybrid components?: the hybrid battery, battery control module and hybrid control module are warranted by Toyota for 8 years or 100,000 miles, unless you purchased your car in a CARB state, in which case the warranty period is 10 years or 150,000 miles.
    6. Will the part failure be covered by Toyota's 8 year, 80,000 mile factory warranty on emission-related and other hybrid components?: the engine control module, catalytic control module and protector, data link connector and malfunction indicator light and bulb are all covered under 8/80.
    7. Even if the extended warranty covers the part, how much of a deductible are you going to have to pay under the terms of the extended warranty?

    Why would Bluetooth break? It is 100% electronics, no mechanical items. It will never break.

    Your right on the CD changer. There is a slim chance it might fail after 7 years. An after market radio with CD changer is $100 and maybe another $100 to have it put in. Most people after 7 years really let their car go. Rust, dents, cracked windshield. Spending $1,000 because you are worried about a bad CD changer 7 years out is not logical.

    Is the US Extended Warranty not honored by Toyota dealers in Canada? When I bought my GMPP in United States, I have no problem getting warranty work done in Canada. In my case, all I need to have is an U.S. mailing address so they can register my warranty. Same situation, saved about 50% versus the cost of buying GMPP from GM Canada with no deductible.

    I just received my Platinum Toyota Extra Care Vehicle Service Agreement. It says US and Canada are covered and specifically excludes any coverage outside those countries.

    I highly recommend that anyone getting a Vehicle Service Agreement (they aren't really warranties) read it carefully. I haven't found anything unreasonable (I knew roughly what to expect) in mine, but there are several ways you can put your coverage at risk that wouldn't cause a problem with the original MFR's warranty.

    You are obligated to go to the dealer you bought the car from for covered repairs if it is at all reasonable. Those who bought their cars a hundred miles from home to save money might want to get "reasonable" further defined before buying a policy.

    Anyone who believes the Magnesson Moss Faerie Godmother will protect them in warranty issues also needs to be aware that MM doesn't cover service contracts so you do need to actually follow recommended maintenance and keep records. You can still do it yourself but you need records.

    The price is unreasonable. Spending $1,000 on the most reliable car in the world is unreasonable.

    I have 33,000 miles on my Gen III with zero repairs. In 20 months I will be at 100,000 miles. I would bet any amount of money over the next 20 months I will see zero repairs.
