Other than fuel economy and acceleration performance etc., an important comparison for some buyers will be pollutant emissions. The Volkswagen diesel and the Toyota Prius differ markedly in this regard. From the website

    http://www.epa.gov/greenvehicles/index.htm

We can see this data for the Prius and the diesel Jetta (is this the TDI?)

The 2005 diesel Jetta has an air pollution score of 1 (only 0 has higher emissions), while the 2005 Prius (as sold in the "non-CARB" states) has an air pollution score of 8 (pretty darn good). 2006 data not yet posted. Depending on the pollutant being considered, the differential between these two scores ranges from 2.5 to 30. The 30 is for oxides of nitrogen; something that diesels do not do well.

Is this an important consideration for you?

it is an Issue and consideration for me, I want to see how much better that gets with "clean desiel" that has to be in place in 2006. I know its not clean but it is an improvement. I also work near a company called WARD oil in tampa that sells biodesiel for 2.25 per gallon to the public or I can have it delieverd to my home in 55 gallon drums for 2.19 per gallon,
but thats a pain. I am still fighting the issue, it will probally come down to the price for each vehicle. If dealers still keep adding the 2k fee to the price it will be another VW.

I am not going to make my purchase until 2006 so I can get a tax credit to cover some of the upside down on my trade. They may be 40k by then if gas keeps its pace upward.
