I had my car since April, and this started about a month ago. I was hoping it would go away.
I am lost for a single word that would best describe this noise...its as though the brake pedal needs to be oiled, as strange as that might sound. Its something I would expect of an old clunker type of car with gears squeaking and clanking because of its age - but not my new Prius!
It does not happen all the time, only when the car is on a slight uphill or downhill and I am releasing the brake pedal to either drive on after stopping at a stop sign, or if I am releasing the brake pedal to go into reverse and out of someone's driveway....just as some of the examples.
Am I worried for no reason?
Anyone out there that could put my mind at rest?

I started a thread some time ago about my brakes "barking" at me while stopped with my foot on the pedal. But without more info, I can't imagine what your brakes are doing.

"barking" was not the word I was looking for.
    "January 20, 2009" ? I think I have a bit of a wait here :)

The brakes sound like .....gears that need to be oiled. That's the best description I can come up with. This is only when releasing the brake pedal, not depressing it.

Read your postings back in 2006. Seems that the noise was related to cold weather, that's not the case here.
Also, if I understand it correctly, the "barking" was as one is braking, not lifting foot off the pedal, as it is the case here. And of course, "barking" is not what I am hearing. Its more like....gears grinding, maybe that is a better description.

    Hi everyone,

I am posting here as this is the closest I have found from the noise I am experiencing in my 2006 Prius:

when releasing the brakes I hear a 'TRRRRRR' sound (rolling r), it is not high pitched, not squeaky, appears only when releasing brakes, and only about 1/2 the time, I'd say more frequently on slopes than on flat roads. It's kinda like the wheel on the wheel of fortune, spinning rather fast.

This does not seem like other brakes sounds I read about on the forum such as the actuator squeak/bark, or the chirp noise. Is it some form of one of these problems?

The car was previously owned by a guy with a gravel driveway... Assuming that maybe gravel can be a souce of problems?

    Thanks for your help!

I think it's probably the brake accumulator pump... it maintains the pressure in the system for lots of the functions in a complicated system.. even providing the faked pedal feel. It runs at odd times even when the car is off, but you can force it by pumping the brake pedal a time or two.

Oh.... and bien venue to prius chat.

Kind of a ratcheting sound? That's the brake accumulator pump. The Prius uses an electric motor to build hydraulic pressure for the brake system, and that's the sort of noise it makes.

    thanks for the :welcome:

So you guys are saying this rattle sound is normal ... ok, it puts my mind at ease!

What's weird is I have never noticed it in my sister-in-law's car (a 2008 model). Maybe because she lives in flat territory, where as I am in the hills. Driving up or down hill seems to trigger it a lot more.

In your experience is there anything I can do to reduce it's frequency/volume?
