Today I brought home my new 2007 Prius. Until now, I've been keeping my keys on a strong magnet on the refrigerator door. It works nicely for me. Will the magnet interfere with or damage the smart key?

i have a big ol' honkin' magnet paperweight that i throw my keys on when i get to the office. no trouble with the keys but once, when i went to grab them, the magnet came with them and landed on my big toe. on the way to the emergency room... well, that's a bit off topic, sorry!

A magnet shouldn't cause any trouble.

As has been mentioned: a magnet, no problem (except for falling object injuries :p).

However: As stated in the owner's manual (and backed up by numerous posters), be sure to keep it separated from your cell phone.

I don't remember seeing such in the manual and when I posted and asked about smart keys and cell phones the general consensus I got was that there is no worry of interference. In fact my key has been a few inches from the cell phone for over a year now and both the key and cell phone still work fine.

    I may have "misspoke". :eek:hwell:

From my understanding, if the smart key fob and cell phone are in the same pocket/purse, the phone will cause the fob to essentially stay active and drain the fob's battery. I don't have a cellphone, but IIRC, several people have reported this problem.

Weird. I guess it might depend on the type of phone... what frequencies does the smart key use?

The SKS fob listens on 134.2 KHz, and transmits on 315 MHz. In order to trigger a transmission, there would have to be something that mimics what the car sends out on 134.2 KHz.
