I was thinking about doing my tranny fluid, and oil change this weekend, and the guy at auto zone keeps trying to sell me that additive stuff... Does it help? or not needed for this car?

I've used them in my other cars.. but never this one.

The ATF ((Toyota type WS) needs no additives and they may cause electrical conductivity problems in a Prius Tranny (The Motor windings are exposed to the ATF).

I also used to use Slick 50, but no more since it caused problems with the lifters in my old Subaru. I now just use a full synthetic oil and that treats my various engines very nicely.

I'd just stick with the synthetic. I haven't seen any reports here about premature engine failure, and oil analysis that people have done shows their engines are fine -- no excessive wear.

Nope. Old wives tale. You'll only hear this tale on Prius Chat.

Absolutely no interaction between the trans fluid and the very well sealed motor windings. Going on 25,000+ miles with Redline D6 100% Syn trans fluid. Exceptionally good results.

But to your post new synthetic' motor and trans fluids are so good no additives really needed. Especially on the Prius which has a very precision gear drive trans and an engine thats hardly used. Observing 10K oil motor oil change intervals are almost the norm running say a product like Mobil 1.

    Ed,

I was not saying that a good alternative ATF like your Redline D6 is bad for a Prius (Amsoil ATF was shown to be bad by lab testing since it leached copper from somewhere in the tranny), I was saying that one needs to be careful with 3rd party additives for ATF.

Prius owners also need to be careful to us non-conductive AC refrigerant oil and correct coolant.

ps. Have you done lab testing on used Redline ATF in your Prius to confirm it's effectiveness?

ed will no doubt let us know if that unapproved ATF eventually dissolves the insulation on the motor windings :_>

    OKy dokey.

I have not done a UOA on the fluid yet as I want it to go at least 30K on it first. A while to go....
