i think we need to take a look at the escalating cost of car maintenance overall. sure its expensive to fix a Prius if something goes wrong, but its expensive to fix any car. local shops around here charge $90 per hour in labor charges.

72,000 miles on my '08 and not one problem(other than the accident). I fully expect this little thing to be as reliable as my truck, and probably cost almost as much to fix when it does need to be fixed.

You know Dave, I find that high labour costs has a silver lining. It encourages me to DIY.
Unintended consequences for the plumber and mechanic I am sure, but they reap what they sow.

i think we are simply caught up in the bloated financial bubble caused by creative manipulations of the stock market that put a ton of unbacked currency onto the US. this caused spiraling prices which in turn caused saleries to fall behind.

take a good hard look at the cost of many things, TV, medical insurance, cellphone service, outside entertainment and you will find that the cost of all those things have risen significantly

I have a 2007 Prius, A/C compressor went out. Dealer wants to charge $1535.

    $1000 parts
    $535 labor

There goes all the money I hoped to save in gas by 2020.

You can get it online for $730 plus shipping.

Is it not covered under warranty?

BTW, Camry non-hybrid compressor costs $1,600!

Just consider yourself $900 ahead in gas money.

Gottagetone - A/C is expensive to fix in any car.... must be just out of warranty or something?

2006 Prius, 149,485 kms (92,885) 1 set of tires (run winters), trans fluid changed at 100,000kms (done for myself), oil changes and gas. The car has never asked for anything else and we love it!
